  • e21 318i turbo build

So ab few months back, my dads mate told him he was going to give him and old bmw. we already have an e30 325i, which we love dearly so we got excited. a few weeks passed and then one day i came home to an extremely beat up 82' 318 that was probably worth less than the BBS rims it was sitting oni. it had trouble starting , but within a day it got a general service and clean up. so before taking any pics i ripped out everything but the front seats and dash to make it light weight. shoved a pod filter n it and ccut the exhaust and springs. it lasted 3 days and one night coming back from my girlfriends, there was a booze bus. passed the breathelizer fine, and then was waved into the checking bay, where a guy about my age was standing next to his r33 with a yellow sticker. 5 mins later and a yellow sticker was slapped on the windscreen. so dad almost killed me and the plates were handed in after we found that about a quarter of the car was rust. In the 3 days i had the car i fell in love with it. It was pretty nippy and shit loads of fun to drive. so i decided it was to become a project ........... and that it could use a turbo. i dont have pics of the car when i got it so just imagine 2 inches higher. why the boot is blue is a story for another day.

    anyway onto some pics

    when it got canary'd

so a few days passed and i gradually started ripping things apart and finding patches of rust, and cutting them out

that was followed by a bit of sanding and some primer. i havent really got much done as i have end of year exams for uni so im a bit strapped for time. come the 24th im free and will dig into it

these are falcon springs. they are SOLID in the e21.

Got a few bits and bobs like megasquirt and EDIS(got the MS for a steal from a guy who bought but then didnt need it. $300 for ms2 3.57 board, harness, megastim, IAT, CLT, IAC, TPS, serial cable and a bunch of other goodies never used still in the box)

i also bought a 2002 engine block with great condition crank, pistons and rods for 200 bucks so i can stroke it out to 2.0 liters. i havent been bothered to get out the camera and get some shots of the crank but its 2am over here so ill get some another time.
anyway ill be sure to keep updating whenever something happens but i have my first exam on monday so im about to go MIA for 2 weeks.

i wont. i'll get round to getting some coilovers for it and dropping it on it arse. hoping to get some 15x8's in the the front and maybe squeeze 15x9's in the back. unfortunately in western australia its extremely hard to get anything decent in a 4x100 pattern with a decent offset

heat gun, scraper, and a shit load of elbow grease with some steel wool and petrol. i would suggest being somewhere well ventilated as the fumes are pretty horrible.

so i dug out a few crappy phone pics of the 2002 block. was in ok nick but the guy i got it from got wood shavings on it so ill get the crank polished and edged to just to make sure there's nothing dodgy about it. the rods seem ok. could use a clean but they weren't bent or cracked. it has the piano top pistons but i was hoping for flat tops to lower the compression, but the piano's will do the job. it also has the harmonic balancer that is missing the extra groove for the a/c. i have no a/c anyway and it looks much better so ill probably use it instead of the old balancer. anyway on to some pics. sorry bout the dodgy quality. oh and dont tell mum i used her clean washing to clean engine parts and wipe things with, she'll kill me

so i had a my first exam. went well, but im still bored out of my mind studying for the others. decided today that i needed a break so i whipped out the toolbox, found a few old cans of etch primer and some building primer, and got work.

got the 2002 pitons cleaned up a tad.

pulled out the 2002 crank. ill have it knife edged sometime soon hopefully

took a wire wheel to the valve cover and hit it with some etc pimer. stilll undecided on colour or if i want it powdercoated

i decided its time to pull the engine from the car but the sun began to set. figured i wanted to see what condition the head was in. so i pulled it off. to my amazement there was a genuine bmw gasket in there which was in perfect condition. checked the service history and it was done in 98'. held up pretty well in my opinion.

as for the bottom end, it too was decent. needs a real good clean and a rebore, and paint.

got the sander out and started on whatever wasnt rusted to hell, followed by some etch primer and then some builder, then more sanding. its still not perfect but at the moment im just happy to make progress

suprisingly the roof had barely any rust. i should have taken the winshield out before sanding and primng, because now ive missed under the seals. oh well ill get to it another time.

cleaned up the wheels a bit (even though they will be replaced)

the door has seen better days

and this little bastard wouldnt leave me alone..........

until he got stuck in this.....

but i felt we had bonded so i bailed him outa there provided he leave me alone hahah (yes im aware i just befriended a fly. my life has been boring lately)

all in all a slightly productive day. hopefully gonna buy a new welder in the next 2 weeks, as my old cheapo just isnt going to cut it. anyway its getting late and i have more study

take the 1800 bottom end, through the piano tops in it and the e12 head and have yourself a little screamer
