  • free subaru

so i got a free subaru gl. coworker got sick of my bitching about riding the bus to work and offered me a car that needed a clutch, and as i found out lots of other things.
    day one
    From Instant Upload

i was excited, i had been without wheels for a bit so anything was better. on the way home i tallied up the needed repairs, brakes, axles, balljoints, shocks, struts, and some other minor details.
i took the pressure washer to it and started buying parts. a little tinkering and it runs like a champ. 280k and it ran right through emissions. so now i had a car with parts on the way and i saw some low japanese wagons and thought wtf.
here it is cleanish, lots of work to do.

its not nice, its not fast, but it was free.

we shall call it the poverty slam

so i have most of the parts in hand, brakes, axles, ball joints, struts etc. to start i have cut a coil and some off the front end and built a proper puller to remove the spring plate from the torsion bar in the rear. i did a quick photochop to get an idea if it would look ok.

      what do you think?
i say i band the steelies 2" which should net me dead flush with the fender.

                    work done to date.

i have been pushing forward with what my community thinks is a pointless build. so.. new shocks, new struts, new ball joints, new brakes, new axles (only FWD sad), new air filter and plugs. in the interest of the schtance i have cut the front coils, ghetto fer shure, and reclocked the rear torsion bars for a total of around 3" of drop. it still has a lot of daylight underneath but the ride is still tolerable. portland streets are shiiity.
                    here are the pics.

                        questions i have

i assume that running coilovers will allow me to fix the camber, bouncy issues i have encountered so i need advice on where to look for coilovers i can bastardize to fit? any detailed custom coilover builds? and ideas for engine swaps. i am going to leave the shitty exterior untill i have the car i want to drive. then some paint will be in order.
has anyone banded their own steelies?
