  • Carter N's slow n' low E28 build

Just picked up a 1986 528e from a friend. This is going to be an extremely slow & cheap build but I figured I would document the progress anyways.

The car has been sitting in a backyard for about a year. It's in great shape aside from the fact that it isn't running. I am told that it needs a new alternator but I am a little skeptical/concerned that may not be the issue. Haven't had a chance to test the voltage as the battery is dead but I have acquired a battery charger so I am going to give it a shot.

    Anyways, on to the pictures.

Within the next month I plan to get it running, cut the springs, and tuck the bumpers. I have a few sets of wheels in mind just gotta find the right deal. Before next show season it's getting a respray and coils.

Haha thanks guys, this is definitely going to be a tank, a classy German tank.

                  Small update:

So I finally had time to get inside the car and go through paperwork and found out some really amazing news. The friend who I had bought it from mentioned the previous owner had done some engine work however this was a serious understatement. The dude actually replaced the entire M20 in 2009. The suspension and pumps have also been replaced... the good news keeps piling on.

oh and she got a bath

Thanks for the comments and suggestions everyone. I have some updates.

So I charged the batter all night and I started the car for the first time today. The engine turned over however after the initial rev the engine puttered out (within 5 seconds). I then started it again and gave it gas. While engaging the throttle the engine would remain running but once I let off the gas it would putter out again. Twice after starting the engine and giving it some gas it would idle by itself but it was very rough and weak and would putter out after about 10 seconds.

A friend suggested getting some new gas and running the engine while giving it gas in the drive way to clean out the system of all the old gas that has been sitting for a year.

                    thoughts or suggestions?

                          Update:

                          SHE'S RUNNING!!!

Thanks to runningpanda and shagrath we got her running. A tear in the intake boot appeared to be the culprit. The car is still idling on the weaker side around 500-600 rpms, it's got a little shake to it. Sometimes it will randomly rev itself up to around 1500 rpms. I am going to keep an eye on it for the next few days, do an oil change, and hopefully have tags on it sometime this week.

In other news, I also fixed a brake light, the seat back, the headlights and one of the back windows... so all around productive day!
