  • George's seventy-six mk1

Having been around vw's all my life really, and growing up in South Africa where every second car is a golf, i knew it'd be super cool, and very rare to own a golf mk1 in Australia. I purchased this car when i was 15 and have been working on it every since (im 18 now). My main goal was to keep it to a BARE MINUMUM BUDGET, as im still attending school.

I purchased the car from a lady off ebay, and it was un-drivable. I shortly saw that it was a simple starter motor that needed to be rebuilt. When i purchased the car it had also come with ugly wheels, big ugly body kit, and a range of other things. I was only 15 so i thought, where else would be the best learning grounds, apart from my car.
This thread will fast-forwarded as to where im currently at.

This is how it was bought

It had a few wiring problems, and the previous owner had f-cked the loom. The alarm was a shitty install, and there was shit everywhere. There was also a bit of rust, so i thought its a perfect time to fix the rust, and the loom too.

The mk1 also had a mk2 dash installed previously, which i liked, alot

So anyway its been a while and i've really wanted to take the body kit off, however it had been fiberglassed on the car.. so i needed a reason to repaint the car after removing the kit. That reason came when i was in the parking lot at a shopping centre and some dickhead reversed into me. All was good, i now had a reason to repaint the car and remove the kit.

So no kit, and just simple body = win.
While it was getting painted and beautified, i had a lot of time. I purchased some bucket seats, and also did a little sound system insert, just for fun haha.

After a year of owning it, the engine decided to shit itself and smoked up my whole street. And for those of you who didnt know it, the mk1 golfs come with a 4speed g'box which is freaking annoying. I contacted a mate and got a mk3 engine and 5 speed g'box over. While the engine was out i thought id repaint the engine bay and make it all the same colour haha

So after that, i thought i need some new rims. My uncle has a collection of old bmw's and i saw some rims i liked. Im unsure what they are, but they came off a e30. 15x7

So it was time for the new engine to go in. I'll save you guys the boring bits, after a few mods, and external fuel pump the engine was ready to start. It started first go, and the only issue was timing. Got it all sorted and it ran great, with lots of power.

I painted the rims and chucked them on for test fitting

After all that sorted, i got back to my sound system and further messing around with it.
Mk1s are generally badly sound isolated, so i bought a tub of bitumen and painted the whole cabin and rear, and also bought underlay and fitted that too.

My teacher allowed me to stay after school to mess around and try build a custom sub box, and i also got some 1250 wrms subs off a friend. I had no rear parcel shelf as they are pretty hard to come by for mk1's so i thought id make my own door cards for 6x9s

      sound deadening

I also finally ordered some coils haha, but the dickheads didnt send the right set. they sent the right two rears, but the wrong two fronts. So i had a useless set, and it cost me more to exchange them rather than to buy new ones.
So i just used the rear two coilovers, and sold the front two.

Anyway moving on, im a big fan of jdm, civics, eg's, stance, and anything honda or jap really. So i thought id dare to be different from the typical veedub scene, and try sticker bombing. I thought it turned out pretty cool, and got a heap of good compliments

      just a quick pic

I havnt quite finished the sticker bombing just yet, haha but it will be shown soon. Anyway i thought id experiment with the gti look, and tinted headlights. So i headed down to my local hardware shop, and bought tint spray and red paint.

Sprayed the red surround, and also tinted the headlights, came out something like this.

Just a quick snap of my mates car and mine

So this is where the fun begins. I was driving home frm school and had to stop at a pedestrian crossing. However the driver didnt see me stopping and drove straight into me. Honestly the damage wasnt much at all, and after a few quotes etc the insurance finally paid me out. I was LOL'ing when the cheque came in. Perhaps it was an old car and his insurance had paid well haha so i was rather happy. Im pretty mechanically minded and can paint and stuff so i thought id fix it myself and keep the $$$

As you can see in the pic, the damage was small.

Managed to source a really nice exhaust from my friend, its a magnaflow. Its just what i've been looking for, small, simple, and crome/polished.

Also got some CF vinyl to play around with

Ok so anyway, i've wanted dish for some time now but just couldnt afford it. But i had saved up for ages and finally bought a set of dished steelies (before the insurance paid out)
The specs are 14x8 +10 which stuck out perfect

Got some 175/60 on them and also played with some colour

So i was forum whoring, and i saw this dude from S/W UK do something cool, and i thought id do it too, as its pretty damn unique and unusual.
Took me 2 weeks to paint, and draw shit. It was extremely hard to think of what to draw, so my friend google images gave me a hand. Its all DRAWN on. Many ppl always think its sticker bombed.

Ok so long story short. I was at a party and the dickhead i was i decided to drive. Anyway so everyone was inside, anda fight broke out outside half way through the party.

I came out, and the closest 3 cars to the party had been damaged, due to some young wannabee dickheads thinking their gangsters. This was the aftermath

After this i thought to myself, is it worth repainting the bonnet, which had a tiny bit of damage? So i just used my CF vinyl. I fixed the dent, and body-fillered it as much as i could. Then slowly applied the vinyl, with my drivers license and a heat gun.

The good thing is that this vinyl was bubble free, which made it alot easier.

This is where i am currently at. And this is one of my fav pics. Hope you guys enjoy it

The other day, i went about polishing up my lips, to show the dish more, and paint the centres too. It came out pretty damn good (rough polish, not done yet)

I also installed a bigger alternator, to run my sound system, and the HID's i had purchased. Probably the most modern mod i did on a 76 ahaha.

I also just bought some new tail lights, but i didnt like them all as much. So i modded them too haha

          To this

So this is where im at currently really. My plan is go as low as can be, camber, stretch, and some other goodies. I have a few other suprises but will hold out a bit on it haha.

I sold my buckets seats today for a bit of extra cash, and will show some results tmoro

Thats all for tonight folks !

Sick car man and what a great color. I honestly think the wheels that came with the car, or better yet the one's your uncle gave you that you painted white go better with the car/color as far as combo. I can't imagine how you felt when your car was trashed like that. Where'd you get the new windshield from?

Wow! It's come on a long way! Anymore pictures of it in its current state? Ordinarily, carbon fibre and sticker bombing aren't my cup of tea, especially on classics, but for some reason it really works on yours.

Haha i know its a classic and such, but its just that every mk1 you see has the same wheels, same style and same looks. At times i find it boring haha, and i like to stick out too. But thanks

Cheers for all the cooments guys haha, its good to know it was worth the work.

Anyway so i went to the tyre shop today and we juuusst managed to fit the tyres on.
I was going for 155/55 on 14x8 haha.
We managed to fit it on, however it just doenst seam safe. So im still unsure as to what to do. It sucks as id have too much problems and troubles if i was to daily the wheels..

So i dont think i will stick with it. But theres just no other tyre to get for a 14x8 that has a low profile and decent stretch... it was rare enough to find the toyo 155/55/r14

                        Just for kicks ..
