  • 1999 Forester - It's Hip to be Square

People come up with many definitions for a best friend

-Some say its someone that'll always be there when you need them

-Some say its someone that'll make you smile no matter what the circumstances

-Some say its someone who it feels like home to be with

-Maybe its someone that causes you to think in new and abstract ways

-Or someone that pisses you off every now and again

Whatever the definition may be, the interesting thing is, that my POS car has always seemed to fill that description

    So what is it?

    It's a 1999 Subaru Forester S

These are the first pictures I have of the car in all of its monster truck glory

It's a 5spd with minty fresh cloth interior. My dad nabbed it with a blown engine from a dog food delivery guy for $500 just after my 16th birthday.

The dog food delivery guy used the forester to deliver the food and to cart around his two yellow labs.

Before, when I mentioned minty fresh interior, I really meant doo doo covered, dog food covered, smelly and torn. But some cleaning supplies, nose plugs, and lots of little trees soon cured most of that.

These were my first two modifications. Dig the roof rack and the fresh multilug rimz yo. I think there was enough wheel gap to fit a small dog in between the tire and the fender.

The photos you see above are from about 2 or 3 months after I got my license. I had slowly begun to fall for my pig nosed friend. I dressed it up for Christmas and also lowered it with the help of eibach lowering springs that were meant for an impreza.

You may wonder what this is. Well let me tell you.

After driving for a whole 5 months I was an auto expert and decided to make a turbo out of an electric fan motor.

    Boost yo.

Notice the yellow rubber glove I used to mate the "turbo piping" to the torque box.

If you look at these pictures closely you might notice some cosmetic changes. I added a JDM grille, JDM rear spoiler, and JDM Forester s-turbo hood.

What you can't see is that around this time I also added some bootleg unequal length headers, a hand-me-down aftermarket axle back exhaust from a wrx, and a 20mm rear sway bar from an 02 wrx, so I finally had some rumble and I could also go around corners really fast.

    Hauling stuff. An American pastime

Ooops. Blown motor. Too much redlining and driving around with blown head gasket. The engine on the stand is from the junk yard, I got it for teh cheeps and painted it real cool so it would look like it had more than 150hp.

More Hauling. America. Notice at the bottom left of my bumper there is a fart can.

It's an SRS Exhaust Magic exhaust straight out of the JDM. It's forester specific, so it fits real well.

That fart can was so loud it would get me pulled over somewhere in the range of twice a month. But I never got a ticket. Just luck I guess.

These are some picz of the car just about a year after I started driving it. Check out the butt sag on that hot hunk of wagon.

    Then came winter

    JDM yo

Next I got a pretty rad touch screen

I built a wooden roof rack out of left over hard wood floor from my dining room, then I zip tied a cool old steamer trunk too it and a steelie from a vw cabrio which I painted purple.

Then I went to college and became addicted to stanceworks.

I fixed my but sag problem by adding modified impreza gc8 spacers to the rear top hats and replacing the front forester struts with outback sport struts which are, interestingly enough, about an inch and a half shorter.

I also ghetto fabbed a front lip out of garden molding from home depot.

And the Jesus sticker. That was there from the beginning. I'm not hugely religious. I just thought it was funny.

Maybe that's why I never got an exhaust ticket.

    Winter again

    Spring...swag

Then I had a tussle with a deer. It was a frustrating experience, but what made it kinda better was that on the part of the back door where the deer's butt hit, there was an outwardly fanning spray of brown doo doo. I think when I hit the deer, it literally s*** bricks.

Then it happened...the panties were dropped.

    Butt shot.

    Rolling shot.

    Hauling shot. Still America

Then it happened again. I got wide wheels. And thus, low became life.

    Rota G-force 18X9 +35 on stretched 225 40 Falkens

    Rolling Shots.

Datz me in the back throwing the deuces. Back seat drivers for life.

    Static shots.

    Planking shots.

We even got some hot models to come chill with us.

And that brings this time line to the present.

I've never made a build thread about a car before, but now I find myself back at school, away from one of my bff's and feeling a little nostalgic.

For my friends and I, it was truly an experience bringing this silly breadbox of a car from what it was to what it is now.

My Forester is hardly worth the change lying around your house, its not the fastest thing out there, its not the lowest thing out there, not the cleanest, it doesn't handle the best, and most of the parts are either ghetto fabbed or borrowed from other cars.

But the thing that makes me smile every time I walk out the front door and see it sitting in the driveway is that its not normal, even by car enthusiasts standards.

Taking a granny wagon and turning it into something that turns heads and prompts conversations at the gas pump makes me proud of who I am, proud of the gear heads I'm descendant from, proud of the friends that helped me along the way, and proud of what the car world is today.

And even though that might sound touching enough, my love for this car runs even deeper than that. The Forester was my first car, I learned to drive stick in it, I learned to snow drift in it, I learned to heel-toe in it, saw some of my first back seat action in it, cried in it, laughed in it, played in it, and traveled in it. The Forester is a part of me, its a part of who I am, and who I hope to be as I move out into the world. Hopefully my journeys with this car are only beginning, the thread might be a little slow with me being at school and all, but stay tuned, who knows what'll happen next.

I love it man. Really brought up alot of the same feelings I have for my car. It was my first car, I also learned how to drive a stick in it. You also just sealed the deal for me keeping my car, as I was considering offing it. Great thread here!

You have made believers out of two Focus guys. This is one of them best, mot heart-felt build threads I've ever seen.

Also, it's the least of wins in this thread, but epic planking shot is epic. That is the only plank other than the recent WRX vid to make me LOL for a substantial amount of time.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.

                        Your blast pipes look stupid.
