  • slow first gen foz build journal

    For a while, I have been very slowly building my car to what I want it to be. I've had a journal going for a while now on subaruforester.org. its fairly slow, considering I'm budgeting for school, so it will be a bit between posts or If i get something new. but you can check out my fozzy from the beginning here;

this build thread I'll make it sort of a new beginning. And along with this, I'll continue to update my sf.org build thread also, but I feel like I'll be posting on this more. I'm gonna start off on basically how it is now.

Andrew's bugeye and my first gen foz by Itohead, on Flickr

looking how my car has evolved from stock, and how its changed, my taste has def differed from how I used to want it. I had glass stained fogs (can see in my sf.org thread), different color sticker pattern, I wanted the typical grids for a wheel set up, smoked tails, but it started to feel too much. I eventually cleaned off the glass stainer off my fogs, made clear corners, took off all my stickers and did something a little more simple and tasteful. And even took off my rear windsheild wiper and put a little ninkasi ipa beer bottle cap, amongst many other things.

My parents bought this little family forester since it was first released in 2000, and has gone through a lot since then. Then my mother gave it to me as a graduation gift in 09, and its nice to be given a car you already seem so familiar with. I'm quite grateful for it, and def giving it the tlc it needs lol. It has a long way to go, and a lot of work that needs to be done.

So, yesterday I simply test fitted my friend's bbs lm's off his mk4 to help me make a decision on wheel fitment/size. I figured they were gonna be a little small, but honestly not too bad, but still a little small (i have a little wheel gap with these). they're 17x7.5 (or was it 7...don't remember). and I don't remember the tire width either, but the profile is 40. like I said, only test fitted them.

I already have my heart set on a set of rotiform one piece blq's, 18x8.5. I'm just trying to figure out what would be a good tire fitment so they fit the well pretty good without being too small. I'm sure I'll figure something out, but I'm def open for criticism and input.

So, wasn't lying when I said 'slow' mod journal lol. Next few months, things will start to pick up. Before I was saying I wanted some blq's, but I changed my mind for now. I believe I'm going to go with some 18x9.5 rota torque in hyper black, for more of a starter wheel. As my car progresses with body work, down the line, I'll change up the wheels. For now, I think its a more appropriate alternative until I get my car's body in much better condition.

I debadged my rear hatch, and will probably shave where my hatch keyhole is...which it all looks messy an getto at the moment...so to fix that, I'm gonna fill two holes the letters left, and respray the hatch, Along with respraying my hood, and my new sf5 grill. I'm also looking into getting an sf5 bumper and color matching the grey paneling at some point. all in good time.

for now, just a few snaps of my new grill.

nothing spectacular, but I'm getting it in the direction I want it to be.

So before being able to further my cars progress, been having some issues.
Recently my rear left hard break line somehow was bent downward and rubbed through? So I bent it back...but obviously will just need to get a new line and bleed them, etc. While checking that out, I discovered my rear left cv boot was busted open. and that whole side was just covered in mud and grease, compared to my other coilovers and cv's completely clean an what not. But I'll have to take care of that fairy soon also. Now, my right rear cv axle is squeaking. Sooo, basically, need new rear cv's, new break line, and new pads. (pads wont be a big deal obviously). But for the most part, it will set me back a bit, hindering my car's progress.

This friday I'm picking up a front strut brace from a fellow sf5 owner...and than focusing on my repairs.

Otherwise, basically, updated plans are: the new wheels setup (still deciding :p), oem sf5 body pieces (color matching them), respray my grill, hatch, and hood, and last but not least, the air ride kit I have being put together.

Thanks to those who still read my build, and are interested in my car's slow progression.
Hopefully I can get this build at a little faster, steady pace.

Other day I finally replaced my break line that was rubbed through, and bled my breaks. Which now, they work fantastic! So my car is back on the road again, and I'd like to really thank Brydon, who's on my forester forum (sf.org) that kindly gave me hard break lines (who also happens to reside in the couve).

Anyways, I def have something in the works.

a bit ago I installed front and rear strut brace, and never followed up/put up pictures. so here these are. a little messy cuts in the back, but I'll do something to clean it up, an really clean up my bay. They've really helped on keeping the foz a lot stiffer when turning, and almost no rubbing. Foresters are pretty top heavy, so I'm pretty stoked. Next thing on the list is a rear sway. slowly but surely.

(an I only ever use my dirty trunk mat for trips or when I need to move things that could potentially be really dirty...utility stuff).

I have to clean up and fix a lot of minor details in my forester, so apologies for how janky everything looks thus far. progression at least.

On the rear strut cover, you can use a torch on low setting to clean those cuts up

Also, I got a little something new.

privat kups. 18x8.5 getting 205_40's mounted on them. a good starter wheel for me. I have extended studs and spacers also on the way. won't have my tires until the end of the month, but I can wait.

I love this. All foz's are good in my book. Can't wait to see the new wheels on it, they remind me a bit of the old school legacy wheels you have in a few of your pics. Looking forward to progress on this!
