Yea, grill is the same size....the slash is smaller on the eggcrate then other grills

Thank you! Im glad you mentioned some of things you did. As i did not realize them, im on the inside looking out. Most of the stuff you mention is out of my price range...ie e-codes, I go on garaget alot to get ideas, they just never get done. Im not gonna lie, with what you just said changed my entire perspective of my car! You will be seeing major changes within the next few weeks. Just an Fyi first pic you posted is a later 940 with different e-codes. We'll see how things pan out from here. Thanks again, anyone else?

Okay, as a Volvo guy at heart and moderator on every major Volvo forum (except TB), I want to offer some constructive tips. There are a few patterns that the RWD guys often fall victim to and you have a few other quirks we may be able to correct.

1. Identity
You need a theme and to stick to it. Your car is all over the place. It has that function over form Turbobricks thing going and then you put stickers all over it. To boot your car is grayscale and those stickers are rainbow-colored. You need a theme. Your car exactly as it sits now minus the stickers and with a T5 swap is the TB stuff of legends, but here where the exterior matters, it lacks identity. It has that "a white trash kid with a mullet and penchant for heavy metal music drives me" look to it like many TB cars.

2. Blacking out the chrome
They say that satan's greatest trick was convincing the world he didn't exist. I think the greatest trick TB and RWD Volvo owners in general ever pulled was convincing each other that blacking out the chrome trim made their cars look newer. It just doesn't - especially with the ugly North American spec headlights.

If you want to stay mild on the exterior mods and update the look, swap the headlights out to the Eurospec ones:

^ that looks very smart and still plays on the age of the car (which is a good thing here).

If you want to do something more extreme, look into doing an S/V90 front end swap. The Swedes have done this to great success and you can find a totaled S90/9-series or front clip fairly cheap:


3. Lose the "Half Flat Black Motiv" and Spray Paint Experimentation
Nothing cheapens the look of a car more than spray painting the bottom half flat black and blacking-out the tails to match. It just looks cheap - not cheap in the interesting, gritty or rusty way - but cheap in the looks like a high school kid with 3 cans of stove black spent a half day in his driveway Kyloning it up. Your car would be way cleaner if just the bumpers were black and the rest was white. Take that coating off the taillights and red out the amber if you want to change the look a little to simplify things. I'm glad your front air dam is white now, the black kills it.

4. Wheels can make or break the car
I know you have bigger and better plans, but you'd be better off getting some cheap FWD Volvo wheels or widened steelies versus what you've been doing. You probably need 17s on that car unless you can go super low and under diameter to suck up the fender gap. Every wheel I've seen on your car is either bland, poorly spraypainted or mexiflush. You don't need $5k in rolling stock here, but get creative. As much as the 5x108 pattern hurts both you and me, I've had 9 sets of wheels on my 5x108 car in the last 2 years, all were under $1300-ish with tires and decent. Cast Rotiform Nues would be good given the lines of your car and aren't too much money. Save up, but you don't have to buy the whole "it's garbage unless its true 3-piece" propaganda if you don't have the money to drop $2500 or more on three-piece wheels.

5. Look at Swedish-built Cars for Inspiration
Your car looks about as American-modded as any I've seen, the yellow accents put it over the top to look American. The only more American thing you could have done was leave the reverse light sections white on your taillights the blackened the rest. The 45 degree angle Volvo badge in the grille screams Yank. If you go to Garaget or watch Vallakra show coverage, you'll get many ideas. They mod these cars a lot and while a modded Volvo wagon here is a novelty, they are a dime a dozen in Scandanavia and many are cool. Even some of the 700-series cars built 10 years ago are still cool now.

Those are just 5 things. If this was a judged car show, I would have fun with your scoring sheet in a very constructive way also. I would need to examine more aspects of your car to keep going, but I suspect the interior suffers similar to the exterior.

If you're pissed after reading this, you might be better served on turbobricks than here. Stanceworks people for the most part could really care less that you rebuilt the motor - many here are about "low and slow" and as long as it runs, you're good. Being fast is a nice bonus, but not really what people here are focused on. If your car is fast for 700-series, Turbobricks will eat it up - JB Weld, zipties, rust, Coke catch can and all. They are pretty easy going over there from an appearance perspective and tend to focus on performance - warts and all. Take this all with a grain of salt, many people here may not agree with me, but it is how I see it, constructively.

Constructive criticism:
Put the grille back to normal or just take everything off
Hit your plastic trim pieces and bumpers with a heat gun (if they haven't already been painted)
Get rid of the yellow... All of it. Especially the emblems
Bosch square fogs instead of those blue things

The fenders, I don't have enough experience to advise you on. If you want them to be flared instead of flat-lipped as they were stock, they're going to take a lot of work to look right.

Right now it looks like you have A LOT of space to go lower without rubbing. Start cutting coils half at a time (although a few full coils would definitely not hurt) while you're gathering up parts to go short struts and sleeve coils, unless you plan on spending $500+$350 for inserts (just the fronts) to have Kaplhenke do it for you.

If you plan on flaring the fenders like that you'll probably be looking at spacers when you get your suspension and tire situation sorted out.

grill is an eggcrate, so its different from my old one, in the process of finding a grill slash for it due to the fact its smaller then former grill, will be doing something with the trim...heat gun?, in the latter picture you can see i just put new rectangular fogs.

Im building coilovers for the front...but am planning to cut more coils until their complete

The wheels are flush with my fenders atm...since there rolled and pulled, just not low enough....Fuck it wednesday coils will be cut since its my day off, and have other things to do on the car

Opinions needed: should i get paint match mirrors, paint rockers white, put jurbo grill back on till eggcrate is complete, 855r wagon spoiler, black head light surrounds,loose rear mudflaps or get front mudflaps?
