  • 84 GTI: 16v, boost, ms, air ride....something for everyone

I have been trolling on here for over a year now but haven't really contributed much in terms of posting. Well enough is enough, and I have decided to post my build in here as I have a few scattered threads on various sites, but none of the suspension forums really seem to appreciate older cars, so I figure I'd post it here. I have had the car for almost 4 years now, so the build has been started for quite some time and as a result this thread will be a bit of a clusterfuck as I gather all of my info from my previous thread on the tex in here. Basically the car is a 50 trimmed aba blocked 16v with an o2a mutt bolted on the end and a ton of other parts that I could go on for days with. Anyways, the car was running, now it's not. The plan is to change that soon and get it to Mk1Madness in 4 weeks. Here are a few pics to show progress over the years, I'll take updated ones tomorrow when I'm out in the garage.

These are the oldest pics I have of the car, so we'll start from here. Drivetrain is done with ms1 at this point.

    Then came coils and wheels.

The bunny farm aka my driveway.

In the garage for the winter.

    Engine comes out.

Sanded down for a light shave.

    Paint.

    Almost there.

Here is the bay back together. It made it out to a few shows including the first Madness before blowing a head gasket and then bending valves on reassembly thanks to a failing tensioner. So I decided that I would clean up the bay a bit more while the car was down.

    Wire tuck time.

Meanwhile I had lent my RM's to a friend who needed wheels cause I'm a nice guy. This is how he repays me

    Almost done.

This is the last picture I took before the wire tuck was completed. Unfortunately we had a mystery spark issue that I could never track down, so the Megatoss came out shortly after.

Redid the RM's, but sold them to fund the broken car they were to go on.

Bought and sold these, stupid mistake

    Rewiring the car, AGAIN.

Bought these, then sold them a month later. Never even made it on the car.

Bought another set of wheels, this set actually made their way onto the car.

Rare shot of the garage slut outside getting some sun.

Tried throwing digi1 in it last year to get it to h2o but sadly it was not to be. harness was old and I grew tired of the random engine cutouts

The digicrap harness was old and I grew tired of the random engine cutouts it graced me with, so I ripped it out of the car, literally. No pics of this, it was kind of a spur of the moment blind rage thing, so I didn't really think to stop and grab a camera at the time.
    Engine is out, again

    Megatoss, round 2

Fan circut, check. Launch control, check

The gaping hole in my firewall was fun, but it has worn out it's welcome, time to go.

    Gone.

    Engine back in.

Rear bags in, not happy with the wheel gap.

    Then I got these.

Almost tucking 13's, thanks to Terry's (www.oldskoolvw.com) Chapman rod ends. Just imagine how low these would go with drop plates

Most recent in my photobucket, and pretty close to where we sit today.

    More.

    Progress:

    Here too

Starting to look like a real car again

    Temporary wheels

Random picture of the boc's that never made it into my photobucket before.

Last but not least, the new wheels:

    14 inch 4x100 hotness

Since the updates that I have posted the car has started, but tuning was brought to a halt due to a bad tps and finicky ignition switch. Tomorrow is my day off, so I hope to get the engine bay complete and maybe even notch my frame

Thanks man, it's definitely been a rough road, but I'm a mk1 guy at heart and this is the car I've wanted for years so it's worth all the bs for me. She's sitting really low in the rear and about an inch and a quarter from laying the control arm mounts in the front, but I think with a frame notch and a little tweaking I can lay this bitch on the ground

Thanks. Sorry to hear about the crash, I'm just glad that you're ok as these aren't exactly the safest cars in the world (watch the factory crash tests on youtube if you ever want to scare yourself).

I'll be leaving work momentary, then it's straight to Lowes motorsport and the garage immediately after

Thank you sir, I quite agree

I made some more progress the other day and I remembered to take more than one picture this time One of the biggest problems I had been having is finding space for the intercooler. It normally goes in front of the radiator and pushes the rad out another inch or so towards the motor, and all other mk1 guys mount their front mounts the same. Well when I put my aba (mid 90's vw 2 liter) serpentine setup on, the alternator took up that "inch or so" that I need to make everything fit, so the previous method will no longer work here. I bought and tried out a few other intercoolers which all yielded the same problem (every single one making the radiator not fit by jusst a cunthair, very annoying), so it was time to get creative. I've always toyed with the idea of mounting an intercooler underneath the car, kind of like how a Corvette radiator mounts except mine would lay more flat. So after a trip to Lowes motorsport for some steel flatbar, I was ready to begin.

I started out with this intercooler from a first gen Saab 9-3. It isn't the thickest core in the world, but I have a trick up my sleeve for that Plus it fits perfectly under there and has the inlet and outlet on the same side, so it will work. Here's a pic for anyone who doesn't know what these look like.

I don't have actual pics of me working out there, but I basically bent the flat bar by hand with a torch and a 3lb. sledge, and used the torch again for the twists, but took out the ball peen (I wanted to work the metal instead of smashing it like the sledge does) and used the sledge as a backing. I ended up with something like this:

This is a picture of the driver's side bracket installed, which bolts through the front rad support and attaches off a hole on the bellhousing.

I don't have pictures of the passenger side installed (the one pictured outside of the car), but it bolts to the front apron the same way and the back piece bolts to what used to be a mounting hole for the ac compressor on the alternator bracket. I can take a picture of it installed if anyone cares. Here's a pic of everything mounted up.

              Another from the top.

Don't worry, the intercooler was straightened out after I took those pictures. After that I installed the new left axle, then I passed out. Got frozen in at work tonight so there won't be much happening until I wake up tomorrow afternoon. The intercooler will stay like this for now, but once I get the car out out on the road and tuned I will be building a few things that should make the core flow a bit better That's it for now kiddies, I'll be out there tomorrow and then it's tuning time on Saturday

No new pics because my phone is the suck, but the car is all together and ready for tuning tomorrow. I had to put the coils back on for now because all 4 of my front valves are leaking and need to be resealed, I'll just be picking up some manual valves for it soon (I **** electric valves anyways, so this works out well for me). Also planning on fixing my intercooler brackets sometime this weekend as I very absent mindedly didn't take engine flex into the equation (and there is a TON of that with this car). I'll update this again tomorrow, hopefully with rolling shots and/or burnout pics.

They're cheap, reliable go karts......why not have one?

The car started up today, idle holds perfect and the car starts on the 2nd click of the starter. Took the car down the road and got into 4th gear and got the car running pretty well using Tuner Studio. More tuning will occur this week along with buttoning up any loose ends, followed by a long test drive to New Jersey mid next week. This will serve as my big test run before leaving for Mk1Madness in PA in 2 weeks. Off to bed now, pics will be up tomorrow.

unfortunately they are in "bandwagon" mode down here and cost an arm and a leg for a rusted out non gti.........I would get a caddy pickup also but I miss my old Gti....My buddys down here had a couple turbo'd that ruled the streets back in the street racing days...
