  • what do you know about e36 trucks?

what you dont know couldnt fit in the grand canyon, but we got it it handled.

Here is my friend Dustin Latimer's e36 truck he has been building for a few months now. its at our shop (elevens' paint & fiber) right now so i thought i would keep up a record of whats going on with the car. might as well share it i guess. you can get more info from his thread on BFC

heres where it sits sans motor and a salad shooter test fit on it

motor mounts made for the M5 S38 motor. its really damn big

painted the bay a few days ago, came out pretty well i must say

its a cool view from the driver's seat, ITB's look sick to me

    its a truck

k so the car was an e36 coupe, now has a truck bed, full pro-am legal cage, e46 arms, e36 ground control stuff, modded knuckles for angle, and alot of hours put into it to say the least. a megasquirt is being built now and a clutch sourced, wheels will probably be the salad shooters, i have 6 16x9.5s that i was going to use on my Benz but i might give them to Dustin

car should be done this summer and sideways on a weekly basis! we are interested in sponsors getting involved if it fits with our ideas, just throwing that out there haha. thanks for looking, alot of questions are answered in the BFC build thread so you may want to have a look at that as well. party on stanceworks

Is your buddy this dustin latimer? [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4C7_m9-ZU8"]YouTube - Brain Fear Gone - Dustin Latimer[/ame]

Like the idea behind the car, and the progress as well as the work are great.

I looked through the build thread though, and the door bars make me really nervous, they seem like a liability.

please take this as constructive critisism, the motor would be better if it was mounted lower or further back (ie. cut the firewall and make room for it to fit). it looks cool with it sticking out like that but it will handle better with it lower and back more.

other than that it looks like a cool project.

        btw, have you seen this?

probably the best ute/truck conversion ever...

thanks AJ, big fan of your Lexususesesss (Lexi?)

as for the first question yeah thats him, i didnt even know he was some well known guy until a few months ago, but randomly people will mention it and fan out a little.

the cage thing looks weird in pictures i guess but in reality its a standard x door bar (single bar going at a downward angle to a floor plate with a two piece bar going the other way to make a x) the other smaller ones are just there hanging out, not an integral part of the x. so its really just the standard cage design for pro-am stuff with extra tubes added on you know? like if you cut them out it would look totally normal. anyways i would ride in it with no worries at all.

            @340i:
i would def agree that back and down would be rad, but i think the front sump deal is what got in the way? i know the pan had to be heavily modded by Evil Engineering to work with the steering rack the way it sits now and dry sump is pretty spendy so i guess this was the most effective solution. the fun to dollar ratio on this thing is still looking pretty good, i think thats more the main goal than anything.

truck is kind of chilling for this week or 2 while we get the other 2 cars ready for XDC round one. spraying the interior is next while Dustin figures out the megasquirt deal. then decide on what to do with the outside, patina'd metal is being strongly considered. whew thats alot of words im out. thanks for looking guys

true, this will be a nice fun cheap race car. how come he didnt just use the oem M3 setup he had? or just fix the frontal damage on the M3 and get back out on the track? or was it worse than the pictures looked?

also, when finished will this be lighter or heavier than a 'normal' caged e36? ie. does the tray and reinforcing etc weight less or more than a roof and glass? haha if its lighter, this could be a good performance mod, especially since the weight is now lower down in the car too!

Take a photo from the side, please.
Could be, that this will be one of those very-very few e36's I like. Something different is always great in my book.

he still cruises the black car around, but he was already building this truck before the m3 got smashed up. he just wants to do it really. the black car was really good but like as you all know, its always fun to start a new project.
if i had to GUESS i would say the car might be heavier after all of this. cages, especially overbuilt ones, add alot of weight. you just cant avaoid it though since all comps pretty much require it. if you limit the car to only practice events you dont get as much driving/fun time. and the truck bed is alot of metal, it looks pretty heavy...
