  • My hellrot E36 coupe, the journey so far.

It's not so much a build thread just an account of what i've done to her so far.

So this is how she came to me, mechanically sound and an almost mint interior, save for the abused drivers seat. It had been stood for a couple of months so she was filthy.

After a good clean it was looking pretty good. Altough there was some damage to the passenger front corner and a nice scratch on the drivers side 1/4 panel.

Check out the Momo M1s yo!

The interior needed a fucking good clean as the previous owner was a smoker, so it stank of cigs and had an ash tray full of.... erm....ash.

So the first things that I wanted to do was get rid of the spoilers an the gash tailpipe, then set about replacing the front panel/grille, luckily a replacement came with the car!

Front panel replaced. Complete with painted kidneys.

While I had the car apart I tinted the headlights an painted the bumper trims.

    New tailpipe

Then, new wheels! And for good measure a lopped a couple of coils of the spring an this is how she sat.

It stayed like that for a while but i knew I had to do something about the rusty wheel archs, which I was not looking forward to doing because until you start stripping parts off an grinding you don't really know the full extent of the affected areas.

Last week it was decided that we would make a start on the rear wheel arches, to repair the crusty lips an then flatten them. The drivers side looked like it was goin to be an arse of a job because of the extent ot the rust, while the passenger side wasn't looking too bad, oh how wrong we were...

    The drivers side

    The passenger side

After cleaning up the drivers side it wasn't looking that bad as the sealer on the inside of the lip was still intact.

Unfortunately for the n/s this wasn't the case, at some point in the cars life the 1/4 panel had been replaced an not sealed properly

So water on dirt had become trapped between the panels an subsequently they started to rot, badly.

And the only way to rectify this properly was to cut out all the rotten areas

Which was a hell of alot easier on the o/s

    The o/s repair section

And to make myself feel a little better i trial fitted a wheel at the eventual ride height

Ok, its update time! I shoulda been doin this last week but as usual work got in the way... My boss (who is doin the welding) has been snowed under with other welding jobs so my car took a back seat until those other jobs were out of the way.

First up is a pic of the repair piece I made for the drivers side.

Next up is the repair section welded, ground back and then coated with zinc primer to protect it 'til it gets a skim of filler.

And now a pic showing the arch lip seam sealed.

So thats the drivers side pretty much done, next i move on to the passenger side where I made a start making the repair section for the inner lip.

Fits like a glove, almost... Ran out of time to get this side welded up so that will have to wait until next week.

                          Thanks for reading,
                          Neil.
