  • '78 Toyota Corona, slloowwwww build....

So I picked this little lady up a while ago. I guess it had been sitting around for about 10 years or somthing like that, and then the kid I got it from, drove it around, blew the head gasket, sold it to me.

Now I've had the car for about 2 years now, so I will try to catch you guys up.

I got the car home, took the head off to replace the headgasket, and decided to checkout the timing chain while I was at it.
    It looked like this:

and I was like "oh dag!" So i pulled the rest of the 20R out and took pictures apparently.

(Oldest known pictures of the car):

Now keep in mind that I have NEVER done anything this involved before, I had a couple of nissans that I played around with, but nothing more than bolt ons and stuff. so this is pretty big time.
Also, I was pretty much doing it by my self, so it took forever, but I did learn a lot.

Moving on. I ended up getting a 79 toyota truck for $100 that had a pretty strong running 20R in it, and not much else...seriously, the thing was a heap besides the motor that was in it.
    It looked like this:

So I pulled the motor out of that, and found out it was a 21R, not a 20R.
The 21r was a japan only variant of the 20r, that was a 2.0L instead of a 2.2L. besides that, not a really big deal, there was alot of them imported in the 80s.
So I go to drop it into the corona, and it dosent fit! the oil pan it a rear sump, so it hits the rear cross member, and some steering components. Balls. and the oil pan off the old motor wont line up with ANY of the holes on the block, because the 21r block is like a 1/4 inch wider on either side than the 20R. Damn.
    So i did this:

and I also had to notch the rear cross member to fit around the pan, but hey...at least it fit!

I also took this time to remove about 70lbs(srsly) of emissions crap out of the car, add a weber carb, and clean up the bay a little.
And yeah, I realize now that I could have rebuild the 20r for about the same amount of time and money I spent making this thing work, but whats done is done.

And before I even drove it, I was like: "ok, lets add lows"
So I dropped it, put my sweet fake Rimmzzz on, and I was like"yeah...."

                      Thanks for the feedback guys.

So I ended up with a 22r block for free.99, and I have a extra 20r head laying around from the old motor, put those together and you get a pretty dang good bump in compression and displacement, so i'm pretty stoked to finally have some parts to start on a motor for this thing, buuuuuttttt..................I just got laid off of work! So I finally have time to do all the stuff I wanted to do, but no moneys! So dont expect any earth shattering progress here.

I"m doing what I can with having to buy anything, like make this bitchingly rad catch can!
