  • my 510 build.

Ive been browsing this forum for a while now, seems like its full of good and helpful people haha so i thought i might post a build thread of my 510. Hope you guys enjoy it.
The story on my 510 is back in 2004 my dad had found out about five or so Datsun 510's out in Granite Falls, Wa so he decided to take a look. The cars were trashed in my eyes, (i was in 7th grade back then) but my dad picked the up for a decent price. Two were mashed so they got cut up and scrapped while the other three were saved. One was fixed up and sold a couple months later and two beaters were still sitting in the driveway. My dad gave me one to start on for a project car and so we began work. Nothing planned and a lot of work ahead of us. Here is a pic i found of it after it was all cleaned up, i wish i had some more of it!

Anyways, after we couldnt decide on a motor the car kinda sat in the backyard for a couple years. While other cars came on gone that my dad build for people. I started going to more Datsun events and as I got into high school i started learning more and more about cars. Sophmore year came and a friend of my dads (Jeff Hino) was getting rid of his 510 so i thought it was a good idea to pick it up since the other one needed a lot of work and i was getting my license soon. It was a 1971 four door with everything but a motor and tranny. Picked up a ka24de and had it running in a little over a week. Heres a pic of it currently.
My four door has been the most reliable car and i have driven that thing everywhere lol back to my build. As i finally had a car to get back and forth to work to i started saving money and researching what i wanted to do to my other 510. Junior year came and the Project was started. I had a lot of ideas for what i wanted in the car but I didnt have a picture of how it would come out. I decided to go for the sr20 and have power steering, bigger brakes and convert the rear drum brakes to disk. As the project started the car was completely gutted and stripped to bare metal. I decided to have the gas lid door shaved because i always would see the gas spillage on the side of 510's and i didnt want that and also the side pillar vents, i do like the look of them but its makes the car look more boxy without. The rear panel was cut out for the datsun bluebird taillights that are from japan as well. For the rear of the 510 they have a lip in the rear wheel well that is horrible for rolling so that was cut out and welded with flat metal, its like a mini tub i guess you can say. And Jeffs idea of the exhaust tunnel was fabbed right next to the transmission tunnel so the exhaust is a little higher! Here are some progress pics from april 2008.

For the color i was really on the edge about white or some sort of green. You cant go wrong with white but at the time i was seeing white 510s everywhere so looking through paint books at wesco i decided to go with 2003 bmw z3 Urban Green. After days and days of sanding and body work the interior and bottom of some panel of the car was ready for some paint. As the first coat was sprayed I knew i had chose the right color. My dad knows about painting so he shot mine out.

After that was done we started assembling the inside, sound deadening everywhere even under the headliner and im glad we did it, its so quiet inside the car its crazy. Picked up some leather 350z seats for an awesome deal with no tears or even wear marks.

With the glass all in and the interior started the engine bay was next, shaving and filling every hole that wasnt needed. The ideas for the rack and pinion wondered around and my friend jeff who does fab work and is also a 510 builded said the s12 rack would work the best to modify. Him and my dad helped a ton on the build of my car. The steering rack was finally made to fit and the motor was dropped in, along with a custom tranny brace. The intercooler finally came and fit perfectly into place after we cut around it. during this time my dad had picked up another 510 that was not running but it had brand new 15x7 0 offset drag dr20's which i couldnt passed up even though i wanted some old school japanese wheels so i ended up putting them on. To much detail went into making the bay clean so ill just post pics because thats what people love to see!

    new hardlines!

    wire tuck

    so many pictures to post.
the car started up first try after it was wired and then taken to the exhaust shop on the trailer.

The exhaust guy lives in a farming land area so i decided to take it out on its first drive after the exhaust. i couldnt resist waiting till it was done! i was amazed by how smooth it ran and had a lot of power for such a small car. It was loaded on the trailer and back home it went. Finishing up things on the car everywhere. I was getting more anxious to drive it everyday that went by. I had been looking for this certain grill i wanted from japan but on ebay they would go for an average price of $600 and count never aford that, until jeff called me saying another datsun guy was looking for some chrome front end parts and would trade the japanese grill he had for some nice pieces and that was a done deal. Got the grill on and finally started driving the 510! only pic i can found before paint.

after some money got saved and i found a painter the car was dropped off at his place. we did most the body work so he just went over everything and made sure it would end up looking good.

Once i got it home the exterior assembly began once again and my vision was finally insight and i was glad everything came together the way it did. The cost was less on the whole build because i found deals on a lot of the parts or even traded parts in some cases.Cars are never done but Ive taken it to some shows and everyone seems to like it. here are some pics of it.

Im currently working on getting a set of watanabes for it because ive been in love with those wheels since ive been into 510's.
hope you guys enjoy the beginning of my build thread.
here is it on another forum:
The goal is to get the car to Canby under its own power. Not "complete" but there.... When is a 510 complete anyways haha The idea is if we team up on the car we can do it. It should be possible..... Right...
