When it comes to headers on any 6.2L M156 motor, custom-fabricating a set requires patience, precision and a whole lot of caffeine. It’s a small space to work with on almost every version of the 63 setup (C, CLK, etc.), so it’s very much a “measure twenty times, cut once” mentality. As always, Fluid MotorUnion is up to that task.
Let’s start with the bullet merge collector we’ve finished assembling:
And now let’s get to the meat-and-potatoes of the blog post, the headers themselves! Since it’s SEMA, our design needs to be highly functional but still different than your standard set of long-tube headers. After lots of research, sitting down and theorizing, we have the idea we’re running with, but we’re not going to give it away just yet. For now, though, we’ve got one set of fully-welded headers (passenger), and the driver’s side should be finished incredibly soon. Let’s take a look at the progress so far, shall we?
We’re moving at the speed of light, but it’s still a long process. Needless to say, we remain dedicated to our high standards of craftsmanship and won’t sacrifice an ounce of quality during the build. We’ll see you all at the barbecue tonight! It starts at 4 and goes until whenever we feel like it. Remember: No ******.

The headers and mid/rear section were completed last week, so the last piece of the exhaust puzzle remained the connection between the headers and the midsection. After all, the midsection wouldn’t be worth a damn if the headers dumped into the atmosphere. So we set about fixing that. The first stage, as always, is lots of tape and pointing.
Despite the fact that the exhaust should, at first glance, be symmetrical underneath the body of the vehicle, such is not the case. There are small little changes between the driver and passenger side of the vehicle that necessitates a slightly different routing on each side. It’s never as easy as making one pipe, then a mirror image of that same pipe. If it were, it wouldn’t be nearly as fun. So we set out making both sides of the connection between headers and mid:
As always, the work turned out spectacularly. We’ve never shown shots of our welding on the website before, so let’s show you all a few quick snaps of FMU’s most recent handiwork:
In terms of the remaining work on the Black Series, the Weistec kit is fully installed and ready to start compressing some air, the water-meth is being finished up as we speak, and we’re doing a couple quick little tricks elsewhere in the cabin, as well. We’ll have shots of the full exhaust system coming up this week, along with everything else we haven’t managed to fit in the blog yet, so stay tuned for this week’s stunning conclusion of From Silence to Violence!!! As always, a big heartfelt thanks goes out to Raging Bull Marketing, who’ve provided us with an epic opportunity that has turned into something utterly ludicrous — exactly what both parties had hoped for. In the meantime, let’s look at this below picture and think to ourselves, “What could Jeremy Cliff possibly be shooting for FMU?” Well, we won’t tell you yet, but it’s going to be fantastic once we do.

Those of you that came to the Fluid MotorUnion Open House/BBQ were able to see our work on the BS in person. While there, we may have divulged to you the secret of all that work happening at the rearmost point of the AMG, under the stock carbon fiber diffuser. While we’re not quite ready to tell the world what’s down there yet, we still needed to make sure that the pieces down there weren’t going anywhere during “extreme” driving conditions; mainly, the track events Raging Bull Marketing will be participating in. So we went about fashioning a bar assembly to keep everything secure. Obviously, this would require both ingenuity and the CNC mill. Having neither of those things in our shop, we ran out to the dollar store and picked up one of each. After a few instructional YouTube videos on how to operate a dollar-store CNC mill, we cranked out this puppy:
Using our best friend and former “Worker of the Week” at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant - the Inanimate Carbon Rod - we fashioned a system that will still be strong enough to hold together the diffu…um…secret part of the Black Series without becoming impossible to take off. As we mentioned, the CNC mill was busy cranking out the mounting points for the ICR, and the supporting arms that connect the Inanimate Carbon Rod to the fun bits beneath the exhaust, which we then fashioned with a clever quick-release system for those times when you really need to disassemble your car’s aero on the go:

Again, just like yesterday, all that’s left to sweat is the small stuff. So stay tuned for the grand finale!

Last time we checked in on the mid and rear section, there was really only a midsection to mention. Now, however, that’s changed a bit. As the headers were being completed, work commenced on getting the midsection to meet up with our super trick fabrication work near the exhaust tips. We won’t give away too much on what’s going on at the rear end of the car, but if you came to our barbecue, we probably gave you a little tour and talked about it. Otherwise, you’ll be finding out soon enough! Last week, we didn’t have much done in the rear, aside from placement of the mufflers:
Since then, plenty has happened. After finalizing the placement of the mufflers and piping, we decided that exhaust hangers were probably necessary, so we made a few of them:
And after a bit more welding, we found ourselves with a much more complete rear half of the exhaust:
You may notice some things jutting out of the side towards the rear of the exhaust. Well, just in case Raging Bull Marketing wants to unleash a bit more noise from the Black Series, we installed a set of electric cutouts that will open just before the mufflers, providing a bit more grunt than normal. It should be ready to start up by this evening, so we’re looking forward to hearing the results of our efforts thus far. Until then, though, let’s take a look at the sort of craftsmanship one would expect of a SEMA build:

The car will be coming back to Seattle soon. I am finishing up the interior while the car is still at FMU in Chicago and as soon as it gets back new interior will go in and then we can put the roll bar and the rest of the finishing touches before SEMA! Its coming quick.

I also don't think i've seen the quality of work that Fluid does. Beautiful!
