  • Unstoppable Kung Fu Zombie Drifter... Shonky 200SX S13 inside...

Ever since I watched my last S13 being taken away on the back of a recovery truck after selling it, I've wished I'd kept it and I've wanted another. Unfortunately, for one reason or another, I haven't been able to afford one.

Rather awesomely however, a pair of my heroic friends, Matt and Doz, conspired to sell an old, written-off-but-rather-rare car that was lying around rotting and bought me another S13. FUCK YES.

It's ropey, it's rusty, it's got a blown bottom end and it's several different shades of red. But it's mine and I love it, even the slightly mouldy smell inside.

This afternoon, Doz brought over his trailer and we went over to pick it up. After some banter, we strapped my new beast onto the back of the trailer and pulled it home. Here's how it looked when it finally landed on my drive:

Brilliantly, it's a cross-over model, that strange beast made up of mainly of facelift parts but with a few pre-facelift bits thrown on for good measure, presumably so Mr Nissan didn't end up with a bunch of crap clogging his back garden up.

So, it has neither sunroof or air-con (one less thing to remove!), it has no headlamp washers and it has steel wheels with awful looking dustbin lid sized wheel trims. Which got removed quite quickly, leaving piles of brake dust on my drive.

I broke out the orbital polisher, various pads and polishes and started attacking the car to try and get the panels a bit closer to matching. Brilliantly, it appeared that someone had been painting near the front of the car as it was covered in spots of white gloss. Some elbow grease and a clay bar soon removed the majority of it though. A good polish later and the roof and bonnet were back to being bright red, as was the terribly faded rear bumper:

It does look a lot like someone has had one of the front wings resprayed, with a blow-over the rest of that side. Not a major problem, except whoever had it done has chosen the wrong shade of red.

Before I tucked her away for the night, I couldn't resist slapping on one of my new stickers so I could check out the colours and quality of the vinyl. Sadly, the print quality isn't quite as good as I wanted so I'll be getting it redone. I'll leave the sticker on for a while though, it'll be interesting to see how well the colour stands up:

Future plans include stripping it out, slamming it, fixing the rattling bottom end, sticking some fat wheels on it and various other bits. Oh, and skidding it a LOT. This morning, my new engine mounts arrived. £6 worth of hockey pucks. Like I said, this is going to be built on the tightest budget ever!

There will be sporadic updates to this thread as and when I do stuff.

I know, at the moment, it looks like a heap of shit, but bear with me and don't **** on it until I've actually started modding it properly.

When I last owned an S13, amongst the many ill-advised purchased I made was a couple of flocking kits via eBay. I had the crazy notion of flocking my dashboard, rally style, for pennies.

The kit I bought from the internet consists of a tub of black glue and a pot of black nylon strands. The instructions tell you to liberally coat the flockee in glue before using the pot the nylon comes in to 'puff' it at the glue covered item. Apparently you need to 'puff' hard, in order for the nylon to stick in the glue end on.

I never used it because it sounded like a load of cobblers, to be frank, and I suspected I would end up with a dashboard looking like a well-used Action Man's head.

Still, I have the kits sitting in the garage doing nothing, and I have a drift car to be built on a non-existent budget, so tonight I figured I'd give it a try. Besides, I couldn't be bothered to find all the necessary tools in my bomb-site of a garage to start stripping the interior properly.

I removed the centre console/armrest of the dash for a trial, took it apart, and after reading the scant instructions several times, I gave it a good wipe down with some brake cleaner (Doz has nicked my tin of solvent) and re-read the instructions while I waited for it to evaporate properly.

    Here's the before:

I then liberally smeared it in black PVA glue before adding a bit more and brushing that across it too, conscious that the instructions were very clear in making the point that it was better to use too much than too little.

Carefully holding the armrest so as not to get my arms covered in black PVA glue, I picked up the puffer, tipped it up and squeezed it like I was throttling the life out of rattle snake. A big cloud of black fluff appeared and covered everything, including my shirt and my arm, but undeterred, I carried on squeezing and puffing away until the whole thing was covered. I then turned it upside down and gave it a good shake over the newspaper to get rid of the excess flock.

Once the cloud of nylon had dissipated and I could breath again, I got a good look at the results:

Now, thanks to the legendary iPhone camera, you can't really see what it turned out like, but stone me if it isn't actually pretty good. It really does look like it's been flocked, as far as my limited experience of real flocking goes. Which isn't very far. But still, I was very pleased with the results.

Now I have to wait a whole 24 hours before I can give it a rub and see if it all falls off immediately. Hopefully it's as durable as it is purdy, but time will tell. If, tomorrow night, I enter the garage and it doesn't go bald instantly, then I shall be flocking the rest of the dash - which means I have to remove it all, unfortunately. Still, it'll let me get at the bits of carpet and sound-proofing at the top of the footwells, so that's no bad thing either...

I just tested out another sticker design... Print quality sucks, cut quality not much better and I suffered from placement fail.

I still have more to test, but will probably end up sticking them on my garage door as I'm sure the quality will be poor. Apart from the mouse, that's going in my car.

Spent most of the other morning nursing a hangover and stickerbombing the roof of my S13... I freaking love it! Excuse the pic quality, only had my iPhone on me.

        Some detail pics:

I also spent half an hour grinding back the bonnet hinges so it opens wider. I love the look and it means I don't need to keep taking the bonnet off when I'm pulling the engine. Those four bolts take up valuable time...

All of my time recently has been taken up with organising our charity jaunt to the Nurburgring, but now that that's over and done with (bar the final write ups), I've suddenly got time on my hands to start getting the S13 back on the road.

This weekend, Matt came over to help me prep the engine for removal. As you may remember, the bottom end has gone on the CA in the car, but Doz has awesomely donated the CA from his. The top end has gone on that one, so the plan is to take the good bit from each engine and make one (hopefully) good one.

I won't bore you with the details of taking the engine out, as you all probably know how it's done. When we took some of the breather pipes off however, we discovered why the bottom end was dead.

They are in the worst condition I've seen on a CA18DET. They're all bunged up almost solid with crud and mayo. I couldn't take a photo as my iPhone couldn't pick the inside of the pipes up. When I saw that, I had to take rocker cover off to see just how bad it was inside. OMG.

These photos do not even come close to doing it justice. It's FOUL in there.

It's no wonder the bottom end went. The oil must be YEARS old. People that say CA's have a weak bottom end should stop talking now - any engine that can put up with being driven around like that without breaking is not weak!

So, the plan is to use bits from both engines to get a good running one and then flush some cheap oil through it for a few hundred miles before dumping it and giving it some decent oil, probably for the first time in its life. Hopefully if I show it some love it'll run well for a good few years.

Oh, while we were there, Matt had a feel of the turbo. It's got around 5mm play from side-to-side. So, need another one of those too then. Hopefully Doz still has his kicking around the workshop and that can go on for a while...

Think I might get on with stripping the interior now. This puppy could be back on the road in a couple of weeks. I'm quite excited. It's been nearly 4 years since I drove an S13 in anger!

I had some time the other day and rather than trying to wrestle the CA out on my own, my thoughts turned to the interior.

I had done a couple of paint tests on the plastic surround to the radio a couple of months ago as I wasn't too sure what I was going to do with the interior. They didn't go well however, leaving me with an incredibly shit bit of plastic. Nobody seems to have one of these plastic bits for sale, so I thought I'd have a go at salvaging it.

I'd already stripped the paint back off it, leaving a rather rough surface, so I figured I might as well stickerbomb it and see how it comes out. As it happens, I like it, a lot, and it's firmed up the rough ideas I had for the interior in my mind:

Once I'd done that, I flocked the main centre console and stickerbombed the ashtray lid.

I took the door cards out and flocked some of the little bits off those and then I removed the nasty, nicotine-stained, tar-soaked carpet. I was amazed at how cleanly it came off:

Unfortunately, when I went to do the same to the glovebox lid, it turns out Mr Nissan saw fit to glue the foam-backed carpet directly to the lid and it doesn't come off easily. In fact, it looked a right bleeding mess.

            So, I stickerbombed it

            And refitted:

This does mean that I'm running out of stickers though. I need to replenish my supplies before I can finish the interior off!

I was a little dubious as to how the glovebox would look, but it turns out that I think it looks awesomatron, so I'm happy.

So, after a day of dicking around, the car's no closer to being back on the road, but at least I now have a clear idea of what the interior is going to look like...

I finished off the centre console last night. The stickers look even better against the flock than I thought they would.

I really want to get everything done on the car as soon as I can now.

I also hit up several new sources to replenish my rapidly dwindling sticker supply yesterday... So I might actually redo some of the stuff I've already done if some particularly awesome stickers arrive.

The stickers on the roof are in a pretty bad shape. I might have to completely redo that, using only vinyl stickers that stretch and shrink with the metal, rather than crinkling up. That can wait for a while though! The perils of using the Stickerbomb and Stickerbomb 2 books! The stickers are good for bombing, but not onto bare metal.

That's this thread up to date with now. I'll be posting updates as I/we do stuff to the car.

Don't expect quick progress though, this thing is going to take months. Hopefully, the pay-off will be worth it though.

love it! i have heard you can run diesel oil or ATF in your motor for a bit to clean it out, they have detergents in them or something . my friend runs diesel motor oil in his sr20 exclusively. keep the updates coming, i love watching a transformation from the very beginning

I plan on having a look inside the head on the donated engine, and maybe stealing some bits from that. I'm also going to drop the oil again after it's been back on the road for 500 miles, hopefully that'll be enough to flush the worst of it out.

I'm guessing you're from the UK? Are you a member of driftworks.com?
Nice build so far by the way. Can't wait to see it finished.

Jasper, I am from the UK and I am a member of Driftworks

eskimopunk, I have quite a few stickers, but they're mostly from the Stickerbomb books. I've been building up the number of non-Stickerbomb stickers I have and that's now quite a big number.

I still have a couple of areas of the car to bomb, so I'm going to need more yet!

The engine should come out this weekend and maybe we'll get the heads swapped. Depends on how much cleaning up we have to do and if we hit any problems!

I like what you did with the interior, although, where do you get so many stickers like that, all the stickers i can see look pretty cool, lol.

                            edit: nevermind... haha
