  • Engine Rebuilders

My awesome pos big end has just shat itself so I'm in need of a rebuild, sort of urgently as it's my only car right now Does anyone know someone that could help?

I was planning to take my time and swap the motor down the track as I don't yet have the tools or space to do it, although I may end up going this route depending on rebuild costs. Getting parts/machining prices at the moment from a shop but ideally would like to drive this fucker in somewhere and just get it done.

Engine is a CA18ET from an '87 Nissan Silvia

    Thanks for the help!

It's not toooo bad at the moment but it's def gone...it started knocking last friday on the way to work so I drove it the rest of the way to work then home again and it's been there since. Babying the fuck out of it it doesn't sound that bad at all, powering down when changing gears and on start up is when you hear it

Give it an oil change and put some thicker stuff in it just to keep it going that bit longer.

Ouch not good man, can't really help but still.

Surely these engines aren't too expensive? Grab one and swap it out maybe. Easy day / weekend job...

There's a couple I found on ebay but they're 20+ years old now and probably gonna be in the same condition as mine was. Also I have a stoney driveway, no engine hoist and fuck all knowledge about swapping an engine

OR does anyone have a car I could borrow for a month or two? Preeeeeeeeeze

Dont need a hoist. Just put a scaffold pole across bay, strop the engine and two will lift it out piece of piss.

Get an engine and ill come up and help you swap it.

We'd need a whole scaffold set up, there's nothing to attach a bar to and no cover from the weather. Just a stoney driveway

If I got a CA18DET from an s13, I think all I need is a loom/harness and the gauge cluster, would you be keen? Keeping in mind I won't be able to help much with the details of the swap except what I can research until then and a good spanner arm

Honestly man, a scaffold bar and the engine strapped to it we'd lift the cunt out easy. I done it on my own when I put the 16v in my Mk1 golf.

I'd be mega keen to help you put whatever in it, but you need to allow jobs like this to become a shit ie, snapping studs, and nuts/bolts not wanting to come loose etc.. Need to allow a few weekends

Ohhh I get ya with the bar thing, tuff cunt

Cool, I'll keep finding out about the cost for rebuild parts vs putting a det in and let you know, you can't back out though so let me know if it's only a maybe now and I'll look into other ways. Do you have some tools we could use?

Research some more on what exactly is required to put a DET in and see if you think its pretty straightforward. Are all the mountings the same, gearbox etc? Ive got all the toolz.

If the crank isn't too bad, you could probably get away with sticking a set of bearings in it if you're desperate.

Cheers Nelly. There were a few things that stopped me doing that this time round. Tools, no garage or nice driveway and time. My 16 month old boy aint really into catching the train everyday for 2hours

Plan is, shop is swapping in a hopefully sound 2nd hand motor this week, keep other motor and most likely sell it if I can (probably not), if I can't then rebuild it for experience and throw it in while building up another beast motor when we move and I don't need to use the car everyday.

Sounds like a good plan rebuilding it, least then you won't have to be worried about fucking it up or deadlines, especially if you've no experience doing that kind of job.
