at my school they got one of those 500E to take apart for the trainee mechanics
it didnt pass TÜV some time ago so the owner just gave it to the school and now teachers drive it sometimes with temporary plates...

It's actually not really, at least if you're willing to go used.
A used 400 or 450d will run you only ~200€ or somesuch. Many even come with the kit lens still.
If you're willing to go vintage for lenses, you can easily have great lenses for under 100€, but they're harder to use as they're completely manual.
Also, damn it, can't get the used red-white tails I bought for my 7 to be dry. Always water in them. Luckily found a shop still selling the early model red-white tails new... will sell on mine and get a set of these.

I got a used D70 some time ago but I cant really handle it and i think i fucked it up in my suitcase when i took it to UK last September
