Yes have to stay within certain formats.
e.g. 2 numbers, 2 letters, 1 number 1 letter (usually stupidly expensive)
Then you have the normal format for number plates (such as the plates above)
Minimum is 2, maximum is 7

first 2 Letters tell the District you live in...
then you can choose between 1 or 2 letters and 1-4 Numbers
If you´re lucky (like Bas...) your first letters are something cool like BM so you can do all kind of BMW things
If not you get RA-.. ... like me, then you can only try to stay as short as possible.

Can you not register them elsewhere?
the first two digits on ours is meant to be area code but vehicles move around so much they mean nothing
I really like E25 LOW, but will annoy me it is so close to E24 LOW.
