opinion on a new car? first thread

okay so this is my first thread/ new car type deal.
im 16 and unfortunatley dont even have my lisence but my test is coming up soon.
im not sure how you guys on here feel about someone like me potentially getting involved in the "stance" scene. i skate sometimes but not nearly as much as i used to. skating used to be my full time hobby but as i realized how close i was to driving and owning a car, i started to look at some golfs and stuff like that for a first car. keep in mind my parents dont want me to own a manual car and i dont even know how to drive one! im not coming into this forum acting like i know a shit ton about cars or anything im very new and probably gullable to the car scene. but if anyone could give me some insight on a potential car? looking for an automatic. so here are some cars i think i would like, vw golf, celica, 04-06 jettas, rx8, wrx, miatas, most "stancable" nissans, most subaru hatchback, there are many more i can name but i think that gives a pretty broad selection. no hondas please, not ****** i really just dont want a honda. my expectations are just to lower it and hopefully have the original bumpers, dont wanna look too ricey lol, maybe some camber and some nice rims, im very new to this guys, ill admit that i dont know shit. not sure how you guys will handle a noob like me but i hope to get some really good advice from the people who know it best! thank you guys

It takes just a couple days to learn, and they're less expensive to fix when stuff goes wrong. A Golf is a great car, but VW/Audi automatics from those years were not quality German engineering.

You list a wide range of possible cars. Seems like you need to narrow down what it is you want in a car. Need to haul stuff or people, top down cruiser, good in the snow? Who's buying the car and paying for the repairs? Personally, a Miata would be a fun first car. Not fast, not practical, but not expensive to buy or maintain either.

well first of all, my dad said that having a manual car would be too much work for a first car driver and can be difficult to handle the car if you messed up in the shifting process or something that its a greater chance for an accident. i feel like a manual car would be better for me because im probably going to end up with one anyways so it mind as well be the way i learn. keep in mind im only 16 and may even be 17 when i potentially buy my first car.

Subaru automatics tend to be pretty tough, although an automatic version of anything you listed would not be my first choice, and I say that as someone who actually likes automatic transmissions.

Two suggestions, if I may:

1. CAPITALIZE

2. Don't spend a bunch of money on your first car. You're a teenager, you're dumb, you're a terrible driver, and you have terrible taste. Sorry, nothing against you, but these are facts about teenagers. You will shit this car up in one way or another. That's not to dissuade you - cheap cars are awesome. God knows I've owned plenty, and I've loved 'em all.

Were it me, I'd buy something cheap, simple, and easy to repair, and spend the extra money on building it and learning how it works.

This would be my short list:
80s Japanese stuff, particularly wagons. Corona and Cressida wagons look spectacular slammed with period-correct wheels.
80s and 90s Civics, with a particular nod to the Wagovans of the 80s. Totally rad.
Foresters, as 244Brick suggested. I'd also look at Legacy wagons, particularly the early ones.

If you've got to get something nicer, the big Japanese luxury barges of the 90s can be picked up cheap these days, and they're bulletproof. Look at LSs and Q45s. Big pretty cars that'll run forever. If you have to have a 2-door, look at SCs.

Basically, if you're stuck with an automatic, I recommend looking at cars where you're not going to be constantly kicking yourself for not getting a manual. That means eliminating most cars that have sporting aspirations, but that's okay. You can build anything and make anything awesome.

i looked at a few of each and the only car i could find visually appealing and i would enjoy would be the civic wagon, the 90's civic wagons, and i cant really see myself driving a honda but from around my area alot of peopl get **** for driving civics

im not saying i wouldnt drive a honda, theres this ex that sits outside my moms house and its for sale trust me ive been thinking about it, im just saying that from what i see on the internet and from some kids that go to my school and what not, hondas arent taken very seriously. im just telling you guys what i know

What Sam says. First car must be a shitty car. Not unreliable, but something you can work on yourself and get experienced with, And if you break it, you shouldn't care too much.

The fact that your paps don't want you to start with a manual, seems to me that HE actually doesn't know how to drive one properly?

bump, any more suggestions? if so how can i convince my dad to buy and then teach me how to drive a manual?
