How to answer idiots who think we kill wheel bearings?

Hi guys,

I'm new here but I've been doing this for around 15 years. I've had adapters for Porsche wheels on my cars since 1998 and up to 40mm spacers/adapters ever since. I know you all must get this stupid question, but when idiots flame you because spacers and low offsets "must be really bad on wheel bearings", what is the best answer to shut them up? I've never had to replace a wheel bearing on a car due to spacing and I've driven 200k+ miles on cars with 25mm+ spacing, but every time I post in another forum, there is always that one guy (or two guys) that insist on the fact that I am ruining my bearings. I can't take it anymore and need a better arguement than, "you're guessing this is the case and I have 200k experience to prove otherwise."

It doesn't work though. I need something more scientific, based on engineering priniciples.

Racing/track fanboys will pop up frequently and claim that lipped wheels are the work of satan and anyone with them must be stupid. A photo of Formula 1 wheels tends to shut them up:



Once I tell them to phone the Ferrari team and let them know, that seems effective.

But the wheel bearing guys are much tougher to convince and I know there is a bullet-proof argument. Here is the latest thread, but I get a similar guy about once a month on other forums:

It is lowered, trust me.


It's almost impossible to get a Eurovan to tuck tire, but I am on bumpstops in front and have 3/4" travel left in back. It's lowered a couple of inches.

i think the level of engineering on an f1 car might be slightly higher compared to the family sedans and hatches we so lovingly stance... dont get me wrong, im on your side of the fight here but somthing like that seems a bit irrelevant in such an argument

As for the wheel bearing issue...

While it is true that extreme low offsets or big spacers add some stress and wear to the bearing, it will not destroy them instantly like those people tend to tell.

Imo, just let them talk. Nowadays I don't even respond to fucks like these who have no idea what they're talking about and just want to spout shit because they don't understand.

To answer your question, there is no way to silence stupid, but asking them to "prove it" usually doesn't get a response.

For someone living near Cologne, the hesitation for people to do the whole breite Felgen, dicke Schlappen thing in the US must be annoying. I try to buy European cars that not too many people modify, so I'm basically subjected to people who think all worthy modifications are only those suitable for the track, exposed carbon fiber and flat-faced and narrow BBS wheels are a gift from god (forged wheels if they can afford them). I remember from my days of building/showing Volkswagens that all of these coveted things went out of fashion around 1997 or so, but are going strong in the less-developed Volvo and Jaguar scenes here for example. It makes it fun to do something against their beliefs and slowly as they flock to the Subaru movement, they start to see the beauty if stretch and poke, because even Subaru guys are sick of just CF, fart cans and bronze wheels.

You are fortunate to live in Germany, but the whole "American-look" and "Tuner-look" (ala The Fast and the Furious) would drive me nuts. Then again, I can see the desire for variety.
