  • Detroit Guy Needing Advice

I need some advice and I figured this would be forum that would be the most unbiased.

I’m ditching my MK3 Jetta for something newer. I commute about 100 miles a day 5 days a week. I do have two boys 3 months and 3 years but they rarely ride in my daily driver. We have a mini van and a crew cab truck also. I’ve been a Honda guy forever and know the reliability of the cars. The two cars that caught my fancy and plan to check out this weekend are:

    03 Civic Si
    120K miles
    $5500
(hasn’t had a timing chain serviced)

    05 Mini Cooper S
    44k miles
    $6800

Both are adult owned fanatics of their cars. The type of owner you would want to buy from. Both guys talked my ear off over the phone and felt comfortable that there wasn’t any BS coming my way.
Both also have a few mild, tasteful mods where I really wouldn’t feel the need to run out and buy coil overs and wheels.

What are your guy’s thoughts? I want something fun but still gets good MPG’s and aren’t as finicky and expensive to maintain.

Personally, I would go with the Mini over the Honda. It is more expensive, but it has a third of the miles, and when that timing chain goes on the Honda it won't be fun and you'll end up wanting to swap the engine. Although the Honda would be cheaper to maintain in the long run, the Mini is just an over-all better vehicle in my opinion and won't need any major maintenance for another 50k miles at least. It's a tough decision and in the end it'll be yours, this is just my opinion on the situation.

      X2

And a car fanatic that knows a Honda will not let a Civic go 120K on an 80k timing belt...
      Something to think about

      progress IS a slow process

Sorry, no pics. The Si sold.

As it turns out the mini cooper has 200k on body, 43K on entire drive train from an 05 S. The car is rebuilt from the bottom up, motor mounts, etc… minimal interior wear, two sets of wheels, winter and summer. Coil overs… I got him down to $4500. Owner seems to really know his stuff and I don’t feel like I’m getting B.S’d or is a hack. Clean title… What to do…

That's a hell of a price drop from $6800... what's the story there?

It seems to be a good deal, but it depends on the quality of the work and parts. Being so heavily modded, there's a good chance you could find some info on the owner or car in a forum. There's a big Mini following in the Detroit area, so someone likely knows something about it. Detroit Tuned may have run across it too... might be worth a call.

Here is the link to the CL ad.

Maybe someone here knows something. I've been waiting for approval on michiganmini.org to use search function.

If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

I would pass on it, never buy someone else's project. Being that it was touched from top to bottom, you have no idea what kind of work the guy does, or if he did everything correctly.

Would you want your kids riding around in a car that some no-name guy tightened all the bolts on the suspension parts?

                  Update.

I picked up a near mint 2000 Honda Accord EX-L Coupe. K&N true cold air intake, dual magna flow, etc... Will post pics. Meanwhile, running just drop springs is a bad idea correct?

Has anyone ran 17X9 Mustang (5x114.3)wheels on these cars?
