I realize now that this is a bit wordy so feel free just to scroll on through to the good stuff.
I also want to apologize in advance for being really bad at starting threads.
Hello everyone, so I discovered Stanceworks about 4 months back and have been hooked ever since, the cars and the community are just amazing. Around this time my 1991 Mercedes 350SD was on its deathbed. That particular model turbodiesel engine, which Mercedes only used for that year IIRC, had a tendency to bend rods at high mileage and my mpgs went from 27 when I started driving it to less than 8. I researched the cost of a new top end and it was $1700. That was just way to much for a car that was too far gone so I decided to sell it. Stanceworks really inspired me to hunt for a car that I really wanted, something I truly thought was special. So I was searching for cars everywhere looking for something that caught my eye and I was on ebay motors when I saw this beat up 1964 Chevy Corvair and instantly I was intrigued. I got sniped out on the bidding at the last second and thank god I did. I did some more research on Corvairs and found that the Corvair that I saw was an early model, from 1960-64 there was a really classy looking old school body style and from 1965-69 they refined the mechanics and made a new more aggressive and sexy body. I knew I had to have it. I searched far and wide for a late model Corvair coupe with a 4 speed and I finally found it on craigslist. I went out to the owners house barely in Maryland on the border with West Virginia. I haggled him down to $1600 for the car and an extra hundred to deliver it to my house. After it arrived at my house that afternoon, I tore into it immediately and had it stripped down in about a week. I spent 3 months rebuilding it, this is what I have.
17x8 ESM-001SL et 20 (w/spacers et ~-5)
205/45R17 Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3
1" spacers/adapters 5x4.75" to 5x120mm
Stock Springs and Shocks for now, I have new heavy duty springs and KYB shocks, just waiting for some free time to cut some coils out of them and install them.
The rest of the car is pretty much stock besides repainting everything inside and out. Also the home made interior door panels made out of 1/4 oak and then stained semi transparent gray.
