The young campers got out in the nick of time — thanks only to one girl who woke up, saw the flames and screamed. The cabin’s roof collapsed just minutes after the last girl escaped the 3 a.m. blaze on Aug. 4.

“These bunks are just timber waiting to go up,” said a Long Island woman whose daughter was in the bunk. “Everything is packed in there very tightly, bed after bed.”

An attic fan pulled air and smoke into the enclosed ceiling, “which added [oxygen] to fuel the fire,” according to the Columbia County Health Department’s report on the blaze. “Smoke detectors did not activate in initial stage of fire due to exhaust system.”

David Proper, first assistant chief of the Copake Fire Department, said there was only one smoke detector in the structure and that the fire’s cause was likely electrical.
