  • Domestic guy gonna give this a shot!

Hello from Indiana!! Alright everybody I am a ford guy but I can appreciate work done to pretty much all cars. I decided to lower my mustang this past spring by cutting the springs for a mild drop because I was worried about it being my DD and my driveway WAS steep. Well long story short I cut my springs a whole coil more than I expected and I ended up dropping it like 2.5-3 inches. And now I've got the bug! I have been lurking this forum for a while now looking for ideas and learning.

Before I post pictures here are some details and I am NOT finished, this is a work in progress. 2001 mustang v6. Cut spring 2 coils in front and 1 in rear. No spacers yet and rims are cobra r's 17x9. I think that's all......

    Before

    And a few after pictures

The rear still needs to come down and the rear wheels need spacers. As for the front I still am debating on giving it a little more of a drop but I will need to remove the cats first I believe.

My best friend had a 99 gt on Eibach lowering springs and chrome saleen style wheels. It wasn't dropped nearly as much as yours but he had a magnaflow cat back on it and his mufflers scrapped/hit everywhere. So long story short it may be the mufflers not the cats lol.

But It looks good to me, I like the white on black "theme" but not really feeling the decal on the windsheild.

Edit: I could post a pic or two of his car if you would like to see the drop he had. All I know is the springs were white and said Eibach on them.

Thanks! And yeah post some pictures of it!! I have a Mac exhaust and they are tucked up there really high and outta the way. It is for sure the cats and the y-pipe section but hey I appreciate any help!! I need to get saving a little, I have recently put a lot of money into my motorcycle and purchasing a truck so kinda limited at the moment.

Oh by the way if anybody is into motorcycles stay tuned I'll post some pictures soon! I think you Suzuki guys will enjoy.

That's good cause I know the mufflers can be a pain. But hey, if ya get rig of the cat's it may sound a little better too lol.

What kinda truck did ya pick up? (no pun intended) I'd love a truck but I wouldnt be able to afford the gas, that's why I own a Honda lol.

It looks like it has some reverse rake but it was even, it also may be because the wheels are turned or cause of the angle of the picture. But what ever spring he had on it rode like complete shit yet handled like crazy!

He needed wider wheels the 18x9s were obviously not cutting it lol. But let me know if you want me to take them down.

Yeah man that looks good!! Saleen rims are one of my favorites fore sure. my truck is a 2006 f150 ext. cab 4x4 with 5.4l. Yeah gas isn't fun to put in it lol but it gets better mpg than trucks I've had in the past. 85 f150 lifted. 99 f150 lifted.... You get the idea haha

As for the reverse rake I think these cars can have that look if they are level but if those pictures were taken within 2 weeks of lowering, it will/has probably dropped some more

Well I know for the SN95/New Edge GTs like mine, the issue is the mid pipe. If you look under the car, the is actually below the frame hence why you lower it, you tend to scrape things. Getting a catless mid pipe helps espeicially if tucked high but it can only do so much. I do not know about the basic model mustangs though since they are V6 wiht single exhaust.

Let me know if you have any questions regarding the suspension. These cars quite different to work with and may use extra cash to get the geometry since they are the height of a damn truck as stock.

                BTW...looks good.

I'm almost positive the exhausts have the same patterns because a "mod" for the v6 exhaust is gt take off exhaust and I believe it is a direct bolt on (adding mounting brackets for tips) but where the cutback exhaust connects, (also gt take offs) is the lowest point for the whole system but as for the exhaust going under the frame I'll have to go take a look cause I can't picture it. I'm thinking about having the cats removed and rerouting the exhaust up higher with smaller piping. Deciding on smaller piping for two reasons 1 for clearance and 2 these motors like back pressure and be removing the cats I will lose quite a bit of low end. So hoping smaller diameter will help both

                    And thanks!!

I actually do have two suspension questions.... How low can I go before I need to look into getting aftermarket control arms?.. And for the front I notice the brace under the k-member sits lowest of all I believe ( car is on un-level ground right now but will a tubular k- member give me more clearance ? Tubular would be down the road quite a ways but planning ahead of time always helps!

Off topicish cause I don't know about mustang suspension but what are your plans for the f150? Lifting her with some big tires!?!

Haha for the f150 I don't plan to jack it up but in the front I'm goin with a 3" leveling kit and an add-a-leaf in the rear with a little bit bigger tires. 33.7 to be exact. All said and done itll be 4.5 in front and 2.5 in rear so it will still have a bit of a rake to it but it's only job is to get me around in the winter (if we ever get snow!) and to pull trailer with the bike in it which will make it level.

                        In the past I've had an 85 f250 3" lift 35" tires and a 99 f150 6" lift 35" tires. Those where a lotta fun!!!!

I am not sure what you mean by the brace under the K-Member as it only should be the K-member but then again I am not too sure what the V6 models have.

As for the control arm part, the Eibach and/or the H&R SS springs are the lowest springs made for the new edge which still gives a gap under the wheel arches. Next step would be going with a coilover-conversion setup in which you will no longer use the front A-Arms for the sake of the springs. Here is what to expect...

go to maximummotorsports aka MM, and look at their suspension items. Things to keep in mind are the Caster/Camber plates which allows you to give a proper alignment. Not much of a camber bolts for the New Edge Mustangs. Also look into the coilover setups and read about them. Once you look into the coilover setup, gettting bumpsteer kit helps a lot when driving. Finally you can replace the K-member with a tubular and its A-Arms since the spring will no longer be sitting on those. It will be lighter and allows more space to lower. Finally on the rear would be the rear adjustable lower control arms. Adjustable in the means of height. Not only can you adjust with the coilover but you can use the lower control arm to help and not sacrifice much ride comfort.

Not many people understand but for the Fox/Sn95/New Edge Mustangs, it take a lot to lower it due to the geometry of the car.

I already have Full Length Subframe Connectors, Caster/Camber Plates, Bumpsteer Kit/ Bilstein HD dampers, and H&R SS Springs. I will be converting to coilovers soon and hopefully replace the K-member and A-arms.

also, if you haven't already, go to moddedmustangs.com and read about the suspension. It pretty much taught me everything I know and it sure is a headache.

Right now I'm runnin fox body shocks and struts and cut the springs. I know some ppl say OMG he cut the springs?!?!? But I've road in other lowered stangs and ride is practically the same. Mine is a TAD stiffer but its lower so spring rate is higher. Anyways lol I was just wanting to cut rear springs a little more until I can save a little to go with coil overs. I still need to get cc plates but the car is parked for winter no worries there....... I just don't wanna go to low for the control arms.

As for the k member brace I am pretty sure it's just a convertible thing just like the stock bolt-in sub frame connectors are.
