  • Dutch e36 coupe

    Hi! I'm Stefan, 29 y/o and from the city of Groningen, Holland.
    I've been a cab driver for a couple of years now, but just passed all of the exams for my truck drivers license (lessons for the trailer start this week).
    I've had a lot of cars, the cars that were the most fun were a turboed 95 Civic coupe, a R33 Nissan Skyline GTST, and an Audi stresS4 Avant (B5)... my last car was a 1987 e32 735i (manual!), but I just wanted to get something 'lightweight' again to regain handling at the cost of boring (understeer-happy) luxury.

    So, now I have a Cosmos Black '96 323i Executive, stick shift,145k miles on it... picked it up about two months ago.
    Yes, a 323i and not a 325i or 328i, as the sellers that had one available I was interested in didn't return calls and emails, so I'll make due with this restricted engine for now then... will probably turbo it in the future.

    It was a cheap car, and thus has some work; perfect for me then!!
    I like my hands covered in grease over the weekends (which, in my line of work, is usually tuesday and wednesday), I just love to buy beaters that still have some life in them and than restore them a bit to make it a great car again.
    I'll be putting the emphasis on performance, not looks... nobody wants a a fat ugly chick with a great personalty at his side though :p

    First thing I got were JOM coilovers, but I also ordered some other parts; Goodridge braided brake hoses, Hawk HPS front brake pads (will be sourcing rear HPS pads too, and maybe new discs f+r), and a complete set of front control arms/bushings..
    Also got an aftermarket steering wheel, but I didn't get the right hub, doesn't fit the column.
    There is a 3.2 M3 mid- and rear section waiting to be installed, but I don't have headers yet, in the meanwhile I'll make some adapters from the stock exhaust until I source a nice set of S50-headers for the right price.
    And because the badges f+r were de-laminating, I installed a set of 'carbon' badges, keeps it nice and dark.
    The intake manifold and system are next, after that it's back to suspension (pu bushings EVERYWHERE haha), might make some custom extended top hats to increase shock piston travel.

    When I picked the car up, it looked like this;

    Pics of what it looks like after installing JOM coilovers and OZ Breyton wheels;

    This was to low (static) for my comfort, once I get the performance part of the car were I want it now, I'll get one of those beautiful kits from Stancesolutions, or whatever is available at the time.
    I'll probably use the style 44 wheels for winter tires if I can get some.

              The Breytons are stored in my shed atm, they need to be refurbed after an accident a few weeks back
              As I was hitting some corners near my work where I raised the suspension a bit (to test if the rear tires were still rubbing), and I hit a slick spot were a truck probably lost some of it's fluids; in mid-corner at about 50-55kph the car took off straight and onto the curbs.

              So now I'm back on the stock BMW 17" wheels, I'll see if I can get some winter tires for them, and refurb the Breytons during the upcoming winter.
              One of the front wheels needs a new outer lip, the rest is just a little dented and can be fixed by a wheel doctor/specialist... afaik, he's on here too, somewhere.
              This one is the first to hit the curb, and the worst;

              The rest has damage like this;

              (and that's a set of BBS RS740 I want to fix the lips of myself and then sell on, they're not damaged, but they ARE ugly).

              Does give me the chance to change the rear wheels offset though, I want some wider tires for the rear (at least 225 or 235 wide, in stead of the current 205/40) to make the rear of the car... manlier.
              The centers are now bolted to the back of the wheels, making them +16, I was thinking of putting them in the middle, should give me a few mm's of clearance from the wheel arches.

                This is what the car looked like from going up a regular 15? cm curb:

                So, after pulling the front wheels, front fender, grille and bumper off

                I am in the luxury position I can do all this myself, in the garage and workshop at work (taxi company).

                Added a used OE fender, replica M3 bumper cover, smoked fog lights and corners

                Now all I have to do is wet sand and polish the paintwork (I used rattle cans) to get it back to shine, and I'll have it painted someday I guess... rest of the body could use some attention too (rusty wheel arches, paint needs a good polish job).

                    Breytons looked nice....what were the specs on them? They look to have a 1.5in lip up front and maybe 2in or 2.5in rear?

                    The centers are now bolted to the back of the wheels, making them +16, I was thinking of putting them in the middle, should give me a few mm's of clearance from the wheel arches.
                    I asked on here in the wheel section about sandwich mounting them as was told it's not that easy to do as you need to machine the centre down for it to mount flush on the barrel.

                      17x9 +32 up front with a 1.75" dish, 17x10 +16 in the rear with 2.75" dish, but I need the rear offset a little higher, as the wheel arches slam on the wheel lips at even the slightest bump in the road when it's at it lowest setting,
                      And for the sandwich mounting, I'll pick it up with the man who's going to fix them for me, I don't feel much for a fender pull, so might even opt for a bit smaller dish... the rears are 10.16" wide, so a 2.5" lip would give me enough clearance too.

                          This is how the car sits now, boxed on 17x8 +42 (5mm spacers up front for strut clearance) Style 44 wheels and 225/45 tires...

                          Rears are as low as the adjusters go (earlier pics with the Breytons, I left those out of there too) and the front has about 35mm of thread left, but the wide and high tires don't allow that (with the Breytons they had 0mm left hehe)

                          And clearance issues with an e36 on coilovers... wud?

                          Oh, and one car of my employers is a '01 S320 CDI that has a leaky air valve in one of the front struts, it sits pretty nice on 18's if you'd ask me... needs staggered 19's with some serious dish!
