Just getting my introduction out there, and have a few questions someone could answer. First, My name is Dillon Strunk, Live in Oklahoma, US. Ive been into the automobile world since I was young, Pretty good with a wrench and have a brain on my shoulders. Going to College currently so no radical builds or anything, money is tight.
Ive always been a fan of Euro Cars, Escpecially VWs and Bimmers. Ive owned a mk5 GTI, and became knowledgable of the Low Life back then. Sold it though, Got a Jeep! with a lift kit! so you might be wondering why im even on this site.
Well, I recently moved to the "City" to go to school (always lived in small town Oklahoma) and the Jeep isnt seeing any dirt, rocks, or much of anything other than pavement. And the 18 mpg on the highway just isnt cutting it anymore. So I gotta sell her.
I really looking to get back into VWs but Im hooked on Classics. Ive been around the hot rod scene since I was young (Dad has a 57 and 53 Chevy pickup, and a 40 Ford that he shows occasionally) and have always loved the Rat Rod, Rockabilly scene. I like to think im pretty capable with a wrench. I did the Cam and Head swap on my buddy's LS1 Camaro, Me and my Dad swapped my Mom's 65 Mustang 289 auto to a 302 5 spd. And it feels like Ive rebuilt the rear end of my Jeep more times than I can count.
So basically, Im looking to get a Classic type 1 Beetle. I wanna slam her with air bags, and get some nice Smoothies with white walls on there. Does anyone on here have experience with Type 1 Beetles? Money is not really an issue, as my 06 Jeep Rubicon is worth about 22k, Ill get around 19-18k for her and then get a nice clean beetle for 6-7k. Some of the money is going to College, So ill have about 7k that I can spend on the Bug.
Ive never done air bag suspension before so anything I need to know would be nice. Reliabilty is key here. She will be a daily driver, and I cant have her breaking down every other week.
Anyways, Any advice would be cool.
