  • -DSerp-'s NA Miata Build

Hey all, new to the forum. Currently building a 1994 Mazda Miata. Daily is 2009 MKV GTI.
I originally bought this car when I decided I didn't want to ruin my GTI anymore, or have to worry about getting shit finished with it before I had work the next day etc.

So I started looking for a project, I knew I wanted RWD but wasn't sure beyond that. Looked at E30s, FC RX7s, MKIII Supras, 300ZXs, and 240s. Never thought about a Miata until one day I started doing a little research on them. Once I saw some builds I was hooked.

Picked this guy up in early summer 2013. About 6 months ago to be exact.

Yeah I know. Stock they are pretty dull. But the aftermarket options for these cars is epic.

    Started with some red-out tails.

    Got some RSpeed side skirts:

Bought a CorkSport 2.5" Drift Exhaust. Love how this sounds.

cs 005 by dserp1372, on Flickr

Made new door cards out of ABS plastic and upholstered them in fabric. Have an idea of something new I want to do with them though.

    Bought this.

Then sold it. Don't want to boost it yet.

I wanted these. ITBs. From an AE101 Corolla. Painted them wrinkle black and going to polish the top lips.

Swapped in a 1991 NA6 Dashboard. Which has no airbags and is much lighter and better looking. Also swapped in black carpet.

Got a 350mm Momo Montecarlo and Works Bell hub, finished off the dash swap. Also a DDMWorks 2 gauge radio surround and Pioneer head unit.

    007 by dserp1372, on Flickr

Got a Sparco R100 driver's seat, need a passenger still

    004 by dserp1372, on Flickr

Swapped to a different color Tach

ssr 008 by dserp1372, on Flickr

    Bought Rota Grids.

    20131209_204717 by dserp1372, on Flickr

Then bought these BBS RM012 haha. Rotas are pending sale, still new in their boxes. I'm undecided on what size to relip them to. Either 15x9.5 et -4 or 15x10 et -10

    001 by dserp1372, on Flickr

    Also purchased Autokonexion Fender flares:

    Test fit

    IMG_20131109_123113 by dserp1372, on Flickr
Mounted. So much room. Looked absolutely silly.

da 002 by dserp1372, on Flickr

    Bought Megan EZ Street coilovers

    m 001 by dserp1372, on Flickr
    And installed them

    m 013 by dserp1372, on Flickr

The result: No fine tuning until the wheels are finished.

    m 014 by dserp1372, on Flickr

    m 016 by dserp1372, on Flickr

That brings me up to present day. The new ride height is causing the exhaust to scrape on everything since the resonator hangs so low. I really want to keep it, but if/when I go lower it may be impossible. We'll see where it goes.

Here's a random photo dump and a couple of my GTI. Which has since been raised up because daily driver.

Wry cool! The gauges look almost like the old Ferrari clusters. Soo happy you've decided to stick with the bbs wheels, much better then the rota's. Are you planning on repainting the centers as well as relipping?

Yeah the cluster reminded me of Ferrari gauges too!

I bought the Rotas as a type of placeholder to fill the flares, but then those popped up an hour away and I couldn't resist.

Yep, they will definitely be repainted. I'm just not sure what color. Maybe just refinish them in silver for now, or possibly a darker grey. Going to be purchasing all new bolts also. Just torn on what color scheme to run.

Honestly I'm second guessing the flares myself. I may replace the rears with full over-quarters and do some wider fiberglass front fenders.

Since I will be running ITBs, the stock PCV system and the breather system will be unusable. So today I made alot of progress on modding my valve cover for a catch can system that will replace the PCV/breather.

First I removed the PCV and baffling inside the valve cover. Drilled out the hole where it was and tapped it in 5/8" NPT. Then drilled out the barb where the breather hose attached to the valve cover, then drilled a new 5/8 NPT hole for the secondary hose. Next I have to drill the hole where the breather barb was and tap it 1/4" NPT. Then buy a plug for that hole since I won't need it anymore. I don't have the proper drill bit size for 1/4" NPT though so I'm hoping to pick one up tomorrow.

Gonna finish it all off by painting the valve cover and polishing the raised lettering.

Hole drilled and tapped so I can run AN hoses, trying to avoid rubber hoses.

Timing belt looks to be in good condition.

I hear you, the tan was a reason I bought the car. But the driver's seat was cracked heavily and the carpet was really dirty. Switching back is easy though, if I decide. I had the whole interior stripped down in 3 hours. These cars are so simple its awesome!
