  • Some engine bay clean up

    Hello

    I own a pretty clean (in all sense of the word) Saturn Sc2. However, my engine bay is only physically clean. I'm new to alot of things automotive and was wondering if there were any ways to clean up my bay (if anybody has experience with this 1.9 DOHC motor). Not really looking to remove power steering or anything like that. Just cleaning it up a bit. Pretty vague question, but it's a shot right?

    Do your homework, and look at cleaned up bays. What tires to tuck, what things to remove/relocate, how the hardware is laid out.

    There is no 1-2-3 step answer. You just have to dig in and figure it out.

            I'm going to be helpful in a couple ways.

            Here's how I would start, being that I'm more of a visual person.

            Literally, clean the bay up. Go to vatozone, or advanced or oreilly's, and get like 3 cans of degreaser. Cover the electrical shit, dizzy/coilpakc, alternator, whatever. Hose the bay down in degreaser, and get like a horse hair scrub brush and a toothbrush, and go to town. Hose it off and repeat as necessary.

            Then spray that hoe off with some hot water, and dawn dish liquid.

            Then let it dry, and start looking, see what you can do away with (i.e. Factory charcoal canister, cruise control, power steering if you're going that far, a/c, etc.) Then find where your jumbles of wiring and shit are, and start figuring out ways to clean the shit up, for instance, wires to your coilpack, is there a hard coolant line or another place that you could route that behind, and how far will you need to extend the wire, then solder it, wire tape it, and put some shrinkwrap on it, or raychem loom.

            There's lots you can do, there is no right or wrong answer, just depends on how far you want to go with it, you could do it to where the motor looks like it's floating in the bay like this;

            Or just something simple and clean like this:



            But I can tell you that between the top and bottom pictures, there is about 100 hours of work, and lots of know how/money involved.

              That second picture is what I'm going for! Nothing too crazy, just a good start to a clean bay. Thanks for the advice! I really don't want to delete a/c, or power steering, just clean things up like depicted in that second picture. I would love the first picture but not looking to lose all that stuff. This is my daily driver after all

                What he said, clean that bitch, but I would also advise if your valve cover looks like total ass you should probably paint that, it makes a world of difference. Then do simple things like battery relocation, if your car has a large unsightly intake resonator ditch it, remove the windshield wiper fluid bottle, do a simple wire tuck by sticking them to the side of the bay in a more organized fashion than stock, then keep going from there.

                  Yup, and everyone knows headlight harnesses will clean up a car on both sides, and create the optical illusion of tons of space if you just cut/splice/extend the harness up by the plugs, holesaw through the inner fenders, and run that shit on the outside of the strut towers.

                    hi,

                    as the others have mentioned it really depends on how far you want to go but it can be achieved with ease if you do some simple and cost effective things. BE WARNED once you start tho you will want to keep modifying bits. i have been doin this for 7 months now and clocked around 800hrs on my car and the engine has only just gone back in!!!

                    looking at some pics of your model car it has quite a good base.
                    my 2p worth
                    put battery in boot ( nice and easy as it only 2 terminal blocks and some new cable)
                    and induction kit (intake pipe and cone filter) if you haven't already
                    tuck the washer bottle out the way i.e inside your inner wing (fenders)!!
                    and consider using a radiator that has a expansion tank as part of it as you have loads of space up front.

                    completing those few bits will clear your inner wings and change the look.

                    also if ya dont want to start modifying the loom just clean it up with conduit or sleeving, will make the wires look so much neater

                    this is mine wired up only thing it doesn't have is coolant and boost hoses

                      Bays pretty clean now, no nasty shit in it. gonna do it pretty simple to start with I think, I need to teach myself wiring somehow haha

                        Idk if I could do 800 hours of work lol. I daily the car, and I'm 1.5 hours away at college from my garage at home :0 would be many weekends before I could obtain that amount of time haha. But yours looks sick!

                          i totally understand that you wont be putting those hrs in as you already said its a DD but the other bits i posted are simple little jobs that can be done on a weekend.

                          only piece of advice i would give is check and check again before you start moving things etc

                            Didn't know I already said it haha. But yes, those bits on the weekend would be a great start! Do a little here, a little there, and by the end of the ice age (Pennslyvannia winters) I should be good for next season!
