  • M5 revitalized

I have been incredibly fortunate with being able to daily this

DSC05955 by tom maloy, on Flickr

I know these have a bad rep for being unreliable but other than a clutch replacement this has been the most reliable car I have ever owned

DSC02628 by tom maloy, on Flickr

But with 150k I decided to do a bit of preventive maintenance

DSC06104 by tom maloy, on Flickr

Specifically the achilles tendon of the s62, rod bearing replacement

DSC06126 by tom maloy, on Flickr

The good thing about the s62 is as you take it apart you get see all the madness BMW was up to in the early 2000s

    I love ITB's so much

DSC06145 by tom maloy, on Flickr

The sub frame now needs to be removed to gain access to the lower oil pan

DSC06177 by tom maloy, on Flickr

    Oil pan is two pieces

    Oil pump removal

DSC06223 by tom maloy, on Flickr

DSC06229 by tom maloy, on Flickr

And we found what we were looking for

DSC06233 by tom maloy, on Flickr

    Good news! completely normal wear!

DSC06259 by tom maloy, on Flickr

DSC06250 by tom maloy, on Flickr

Given the visual wear I am going to plastiguage the old bearings to make sure they are in spec

DSC06255 by tom maloy, on Flickr

Also cleaning everything I take off

DSC06321 by tom maloy, on Flickr

    Fresh parts!

DSC06336 by tom maloy, on Flickr

    The goods

DSC06340 by tom maloy, on Flickr

That is it for now, I Plastiguaged all the old bearings and all were well within BMW specifications! not to bad for 150k miles

I had no idea the intake manifold looked like that inside. Cool stuff when M was M.

The spread of new bearings, Rod fasteners and gaskets!

DSC06344 by tom maloy, on Flickr

Old bearings gone, new bearings ready to go in

DSC06361 by tom maloy, on Flickr

DSC06358 2 by tom maloy, on Flickr

Couldn't help but notice the wear on the oil pump tensioner/guide

DSC06412 by tom maloy, on Flickr

Looking groovy, but not in the good way

DSC06407 by tom maloy, on Flickr

Ordered a new one, the steel spring on the old tensioner also had lost quite a bit of tension

DSC06410 by tom maloy, on Flickr

That is about it for down here but I have much more work left (hint) timing chain guides

It is cool but it's also just one more gasket you have to buy

                      Engine GTFO!

Luckily the top portion of this job is relatively simple

                      No bad noises so far

Weight reduction is easy, just pull that dumb air pump out
