Need Help on a Cannon Camera please

ok im just starting to get into photography and i have a family friend selling me a Cannon Eos i believe thats what he said it was. Im suppose to go look at it tonight, anyways he says its a dslr and i was just wondering what should i look for and if they are good cameras. I read stuff online that say they are good but i wanted your guys opinions also im getting it for $250 so is that a good deal? let me know thanks
