Drift girl, you're right. I've never owned one and I pulled just about all of what I said from what I've read and from what I've heard from local 8 owners. Sorry if I came off as a beligerent ass.
I think I'd take a 3.0CSL over the other big expensive and rare BMW coupes. I know a bastard that owns 2. Sadly, he refuses to adopt me.
Ive owned a few 8 series BMWs ...So I talk from actual knowlege about the cars, not from reading "stuff" on the interweb...you can always tell those types when this car is mentioned because they all say the same stuff
Nikasil problem was with all of the BMW 8cylinders within a short time span...plus, you're cheatin yourself if you dont opt for the V12 anyway
If you purchase a 100k car, they dont expect you to be wrenching on the thing. That makes as much sense as complaining about maintenance cost on a NASA space shuttle that u got on the cheap in a walmart parking lot.
Just like any high end car: Ferrari, Lambo, Aston,Etc,Etc....Purchasing the car itself is only half the battle
The car wasnt built for the "back yard mechanic". The V12 is a marvel and not overly complicated. They were built for balance. It doesnt "All go bad", if it shuts down one side...its designed to operate that way if sumthin goes wrong.
Maintenance nightmare to someone who bought a car they couldnt afford to own....just like any other car, when its owners try to step beyond their means.
Its not like they break down more often..its just that "normal" ish costs hella to fix. Thats the price you pay for owning a high end car...its not an E30 or a civic (no offence to those E30 owners...I hope to be one soon!)
Ive got an 8 series down in my garage (right now )that ive been restoring, because the previous owner was in over his head. He could afford to by the car iteslf, but turned it into a hack job when he found out how expensive parts are compared to the E36 he was driving. I couldve bought a nice used GS / LS Lexus with the money Ive spent just to get that 8 up to par.
The economy did the 8 project in...people who bought them as a bargain ruined them.
The 8er is unlike any BMW within 10yrs of its time and the NSX was the best that Honda had to offer.
NSX is nice, Ive driven them as well....but this comparison is Apples n Oranges. Like trying to decide if u want a pickup truck or a motorcyle....Based on looks alone
fawk it, I'd buy both cause theyre two different types of cars.
The economy wasn't the only thing that did the 8 in. They are a maintenance nightmare. The aluminum V8s turned out to be pretty problematic, as the liners in them tended to wear out prematurely and usually necessitated complete motor replacement. The V12s were needlessly complicated, because they essentially sandwiched 2 inline 6s. So there are 2 complete ignition systems. If one side goes bad, it all goes bad. If you're not mechanically inclined they will run you into the ground.
Oh and the V12 in the 8s shares absolutely nothing with the McLaren F1s motor.
Anyway, this thread is about looks, and like I said earlier they do nothing for me.

8's kill 6's...all day / everyday. Its one of those simple facts in life.
The only thing that did the 8 in was the economy...and people who buy them...that cant afford them. So they bitch about the price to replace a few bolts or moan about how may mpg the V12 gets.
Theres still a 6 series and a new 8 coming soon...nothing was "replaced".

Designing a crazy looking mid engine car really isn't nearly as hard as designing a classic, gorgeous looking car. Don't get me wrong I couldn't do it but I think a lot of people are blinded by the unique and supercaresque look of the nsx rather than comparing the 2s body lines. Also at first i was like def the nsx but i think its because ive seen so many badass super heavily modded ones with crazy hp numbers. You never see a heavily modded 8 series especially not with the crazy mods people do to nsxs. The 8 is way ahead of it's time and still timeless. The body lines are perfect.

love them both. I would honestly drive either. I love nsx's from back in the day, and now they are actually affordable lol I bet the nsx is actually affordable to maintain vs the bmw though
Voted for the NSX. And I'm a BMW guy. I went racing (I was the passenger LOL) at Leguna Seca in a Twin Turbo NSX with around 500 WHP. So I have a biased opinion. Never been in an 8 series.
E24 owner here. The 8 series sucks. They built it to replace the 6 and got everything wrong. The front end will always remind me of a goddamn 1st gen Ford Probe with kidney grilles super glued on. The b-pillarless design is great, but that's about all that looks good. Lights up, it looks mentally retarded. Don't even get me started on the disaster they call the V12.
The NSX, especially the 1st gens, will always be beautiful to me.
