i'm confused, an e39 M5 engine makes almost 100 more than a E46 M3 engine? Shouldn't the M3 engine make close to it since it's newer (it's newer isn't it? I'm not a BMW pro). I mean, I know one is a v8 and ones a I6...are e39 M5's that fast?

S62's have 394 bhp from the factory, so that's about ~60 more than the S5 (rated at 333bhp)

The S65 (E9x M3 motor) makes about 420 bhp.

And yes, even in stock form, the E39 M5 is damn fast.

What looks like a mild-mannered BMW E38 7-series is a completely different beast once the key is turned. The secret lies under the hood, where Fluid MotorUnion has shoehorned the S62 5.0L V8 motor from an E39 M5.

It made 411 hp at the rear wheels, which when translated to crank horsepower in the Dyno Dynamics dyno computer, becomes a smidge more than 500 bhp.
