  • E30 Help Request. Custom Low Profile Oil Pan

So like the title states my oil pan has become quite a problem on my e30. It has the m20b27 or eta motor. Currently the oil pan is only 2-3 fingers from the ground, and being an aluminum pan it can only take so much abuse, and I do not like being on the verge of something happening to it. So my real only option is a skid plate, but the big name skid plates for the e30 platform all would be nearly on the ground, so my idea would be make a custom fabbed skid plate that is thick compared to the other skid plates that sits much closer to the oil pan giving me more ground clearance.

My questions to the community, are
    1. Does anyone have any experience making a custom skid plate for an e30?
    2. Steel or Aluminum?
    3. What would be a safe thickness and distance from the oil pan, so that it sits as close to the pan as possible.

I dont have any experience with fabricating skid plates, which is why I want to know of some specs to keep the oil pan safe, but still keep it as close to the oil pan as possible. My thought was 3/8 inch steel, with 3/8-1/2 inch in between the skid plate and the oil pan. Any input on this? Too close? Too thin? Overkill? Im really just looking for any information on skid plates for the m20 engine in an e30, especially for a low profile option to increase ground clearance.
