My steps for success:
1. Observe. Look at builds you like. Try to articulate what you like about them. Try to articulate what you'd improve were it your car. Ask lots of questions. Research like hell.
2. Unless you're deliberately building a shitbox or a drift missile, the freshest wheels in the world won't make up for a messed-up car. Maintenance and repairs first, mods second.
3. Plan. Don't expect things to come together if you don't make them come together. God is in the details.
4. Don't be afraid to start over or edit your work. Design is an iterative process.
5. Don't cheap out. Do it right the first time.
6. Do your thing. You're not going to get rich or be happy off e-fame or scene points, but you might just be happy with a car that is yours and yours alone.
