The original top mount was to high for the thread on the shock to go through the e39 coilovers. so i tested a top mount from my e30 i had lying and it fit. and i cut the strut tube just i line with the stabilizer bar mount

just after reading through your whole thread and love the car! i just want to ask a few qustions about what you did to fit the coilovers as i am thinking of doing this with my e34. Do you have to use e30 top mounts for the front or will the standard e32/e34 top mounts fit the coilovers, also roughly how much of the strut tube under the spring perch did u cut off because your car sits exactly how i want mine to sit any help would be great thanks

nice.. but why didnt you just use E34 coilovers? there's different choises out there and you need to do the same as if you were installing them on an E34.
