  • $1000 bmw

Some of you may have followed my train wreck over trying to find a BMW 3 series from this thread. I figured now that I got the stupid car I would document the crap I am doing to it.

This car is mostly going to share driveway and garage time with my Miata.

    Code:
    Total Spent:

    1993 BMW 318i: $1000
    Alternator: $ 200
    ____________________
    Total: $1200

This is how it arrived in my driveway (August 16, 2009):

The car ran pretty good till it ate it's first battery forcing me to use two Optima Red Tops and a battery charger to get around for a day.

Upon returning from the parts store I had to cool the engine down fast because I had to go to work pretty soon.

Old alternator (left) new one (not left). The old one looked to be pretty new, I hope this isn't a bad sign of things to come.

Sweet leaves in my air box.

Not only did I forget to buy a new belt and had to reuse the old one, the alternator sits a little crooked. Not sure what is going on here, but it might be the cause of the previously dead alternator. I will try to fix this Saturday.

Ask me about Mazdas (FWD or RWD)!

            Next things on the list:

            Brake pads
            Brake rotors
            Spark plugs
            Spark plug wires
            Oil change
            Coolant change
            Shift knob

Then I can start saving up to replace the blown suspension for something nice.

you should spray paint it until you can afford some real paint.

                  good start and good luck

I thought about flat blacking it, but that's so played out. I rattle canned my first 240sx in 2001. I think I'll just tell everyone I oxidized my paint on purpose and wait for everyone to start biting my style.

That all being said, I might flat white it.

buff it and deal with it...save for real paint.

I am trying to price out pads, rotors, lines, and fluid for the brakes. That "check brakes" warning light is starting to worry me. EBC Red Stuff pads and Brembo blank rotors is the plan, I'll see what my friend can order at his shop.

I am also pretty sure my IAC is messed up, I get a check engine light at idle and it goes away if I tap the gas. I assume BMW uses a pretty standard IAC and not something weird.

Spent 6hrs with the BMW today. Changed the belts, tracked down the 100 vacuum leaks (still not done yet), replaced missing bolts, replaced the burnt out bulbs. It might just be a dependable car now. I took quite a few trips to the parts store today, I am beat. Next step is to restore some of the interior and work on the stance.

                            Phew!

IS that red a one stage? You could probably cut and polish it back to red if it is
