  • I think it's time for an upgrade...

I own a D40, and although, I've been pretty satisfied with the Nikkor 18-55mm the camera came with, I'm looking to upgrade from the kit lens. Any suggestions?

: That's a bit of an upgrade to say the least. Don't now if that's an AF-S lens or not... probably is if you recommended it.

What do you like shooting? The 55-200mm is a fun cheap zoom that's AF-S and a good counterpart to the 18-55. It's not really sharper or more professional, but it's a good lens that adds some reach to the d40. Should also ask a budget.

If you don't know what you want, I'd start there and learn. Beyond that the lack of autofocus in the d40 is holding you back from a lot of options.

      Test 55-200 shots:

unfortunately the D40 only accepts DX lenses

maybe depending on you budget a 12-24 f/4?
or if you want a telephoto on a smaller budget you could go with the more popular upgrade of a 55-200 VR

The only Nikon bodies that have that issue are the D40(x) and D60. All of their other DSLRs can use any Nikon lens made since 1959.

Not sure I believe that, When I was pondering switching a few months back I found this simple chart with a few quick footnotes.

Wait a sec. . . this is anything but simple!

I'd pay about 100ish for a non VR and 150ish for the VR version.

Oh... that's on craigslist. I'd just search around for the right deal on a VR version. 150-200 is the range I see them in.
