I own a D40, and although, I've been pretty satisfied with the Nikkor 18-55mm the camera came with, I'm looking to upgrade from the kit lens. Any suggestions?

What do you like shooting? The 55-200mm is a fun cheap zoom that's AF-S and a good counterpart to the 18-55. It's not really sharper or more professional, but it's a good lens that adds some reach to the d40. Should also ask a budget.
If you don't know what you want, I'd start there and learn. Beyond that the lack of autofocus in the d40 is holding you back from a lot of options.
Test 55-200 shots:

The only Nikon bodies that have that issue are the D40(x) and D60. All of their other DSLRs can use any Nikon lens made since 1959.Dylan Leff - www.originalplate.com
