Water Trap Help

I have just purchased a smc water trap to go inbetween the air tank and the VU4 valve.
The water trap arrived today, when looking at the water trap I can rotate the bowl at the bottom to either where the inlet or the outlet pipe goes.
Can someone help me as to which position I need to put the valve in when on my car please?

Little confused about your question. But yes, put it between the tank and the manifold, not between the compressor and the tank.

Not sure I follow you either. Are you trying to figure out whether or not the water trap is open or closed before you install it?
