I've always used teflon tape but its been a hit or miss in getting a perfect seal. what are the other options that work for some of you?

Not for NPT joints. If it leaks and it's NPT it likely isn't tight enough.

We use thread tape for all of our setups without any leak problems. If it leaks, do it again but if you hold the NPT side of the fitting closest to you, three clockwise wraps should do just fine.
Just a heads up. All NPT is tapered so don't over tighten the fittings because they could start to mess up threads in the tank or whatever the fitting is going into.

I used "leak lock". Its used at my work for sealing threads on a/c systems where the particles are smaller than air.
