  • German Look Aircooleds

I've been having a craving for German Look bugs and other aircooleds lately.

German Look from a visual point of view basically means big, modern wheels, huge brakes, often a stripped interior with bucket seats and a cage. Performance wise often lots of power, either modded aircooled engines or Porsche or Subaru swaps. That is my understanding.

    I'll start.

I have been into air-cooleds since 1990 (when I used to campaign a 1969 two-toned Beetle converted to look pre-1967 and lowerd 7 inches), and I could never get into German-look. Pre-'67 Cal look with mega drop is my preference.

Newer Porsche wheels can be ok in silver or chrome if they are 17" or less and the car is no more than an inch off the ground. The German-look stuff generally has too much aerodynamics garbage and air vents all over the place. A clean shaved or retro bug on chrome 17" twists or fully polished Fuchs is something I love love to build. My wife just thinks they are too effeminate or I would have one now.

How is this for German Look?

                    Not your average Ghia: http://bader-racing.de/en/the_build/...ild_vision.htm

I am a Cal-Look guy myself, I grew up with my Dad's '60. Someday I'd like to build an early big-window car.

                        No....bad!

                        No.

Classic wheels, early cars, majorly narrowed, crazy camber, crazy low, Patina preferably, adds to character.
