  • '82 528e bmw e28 - 5spd manual - SW Ohio

198k miles - runs great, very dependable. i drive it every day.
    5 speed
    lowered on cut springs.
just had full tune up and front brakes.
have new rear brakes to be installed.
decent interior, a couple of blemishes.
    good tires
2nd gear is getting grouchy. the whole shifting assembly is so old/worn that i think the angle to engage 2nd is tough. it also could be the beginning signs of a worn syncro although the shifter does not pop out of gear as worn syncros tend to do.
muffler was removed and replaced with glass pack and baffled chrome tips. sounds good, not too loud.
tires are excellent with lots of tread.

has a few things that need attention:
has oil leak at front cam seal. have seal just havnt gotten to it.
driverside inside door handle recently cracked. i have a replacement.
driverside rear door is stuck locked. havnt looked into it yet.

    looking for $1,100

willing to work out trades on other modes of transportation: early model bmw's, vw's (mk1- mk2's).
    trade must be manual

    thanks for looking

                Engine pics:

                Heater works great.
a/c system holds pressure but the compressor doesnt seem to be working correctly. it spins freely but doesnt pump out any cold air. when you turn on the a/c you can feel the load from the pump. when i first bought the car i was going to give it a recharge but the system had plenty of pressure.

Dang I really want this car but I am trying to get into a house. I think this would be a great starter car for me to work on. PM me if you are willing to work out something.

took the car by a shop yesterday after work and let a mechanic drive it. his diagnosis is a worn throw out bearing.

his reasoning is the car has 198k miles and is still driving on the original clutch and is also notchy when shifting into any gear (2nd being noticeably worse). the bearing also makes constant noise when the clutch is engaged but out of gear.

Did he give you a price to fix something like this?

It would be the price of a clutch kit and labor. No reason to replace the bearing and not the clutch since you have to take it all apart anyway. Looks like less than $300 without labor.

Not good news but better than worn syncros.

Yeah very true. Do you think the car would make it to Houston?
